  1. at the outbreak of world war 2 ,,,,thousands of British of pigeon fanciers gave their pigeons to the war effort [THIS MUST NEVER BE FORGOTTEN] to act as message carriers. during the period of the war nearly quarter of a million birds were used by the army, the r.a.f. and the civil defence services, including the police, the fire service, home guard and even bletchley park. pigeon racing was stopped,,, and BIRDS OF PREY, ALONG THE COASTS OF BRITTAIN , WERE CULLED, so that British pigeons could arrive home unhindered BY THESE PREDETORS, there was tight controls on the keeping of pigeons and even rationing for pigeon corn ,,
  2. another of these fantastic dicken medal winners was simply,",pigeon nurp 38 bpc 6." date of award aug 1946 " for three outstanding flights from france while serving with the special section pigeon service i,e, 11th july 1941 ,,, 9th sep 1941 ,,and 29 nov 1941,,,,, ,,,,just one other of these true" champions"
  3. all r,a,f bombers and reconnaissance aircraft carried pigeons, and, if the aircraft had to ditch,,the planes co-ordinanates, were sent back with the pigeon, to its r a f base and rescue operation was effected thousands of servicemen's lives were saved by these birds that often flew in extreme circumstances , thus enabling us to be hear today,,,,yes we have a lot to thank these soldiers and these gallant pigeons for

  5. ah ,,got you now bruno, but it does make you think ,,if this is the case ,, there must be a lot in the transporter like this,?? i my opinion if they drink even once in the basket they'll remember ,, wonder if you fed these birds in the loft ,,,,with no water,, then basketed them then after a short while they should be wanting a drink,, put the drinkers on the basket and let them hear you pouring the water in [the splashing etc] when bird drink they tend to see the others ,and [hopefully ] cotton on ,, but their stuborn little so an so,s
  6. if theve eaten in the basket ,bruno, and havent drunk for three days ,,try and handle each yb INSIDE the basket ,poking their heads through the basket ,they should drink then [if not, theve had a drink without you noticing it ] best of luck

  11. there are as many different ,so called breeds as , many different type races ,, as well as differant type fanciers,,in my opinion a good manager has a ability to determine which birds are capable[irrespective of what their , so called breed is ] of what, the pigeons capabilities are and the way to set them up for their determined race, easier to print than do,, ;D ;D ;D

  23. yip, thats true pego ,, the station master at each wee station had to fill the label on the returning basket,,,, i,e lib 1,30 weather fine, or weather cloudy etc,,but on the label supplied by b,r was" do not lib if raining or mist" ,, which they adhered to ,,or you could phone up the station and say lib or dont lib :)
  24. two differant races , two differant liberation times ,cant compare,,,,,, the other differance is that andy is an expert racer of pigeons [proven fact, many times ]
  25. ;D ;D ;D i used to cycle to eskbank station [all down hill with the birds ;D] the porter would weigh the basket [with my toe under the scales ;D ;D] about 3 shillings[5 shillings if you never had the knack with the toe ;D ;D ;D] to get them trained from anywhere from gorebridge8 miles ,fountainhall, heriot ,stow, gala melrose ,hasendean and50 miles hawick ;D ;D ,,not bad tossing at all ;D ;D ;D,,,but at that time , i was fitter than the birds ;D ;D ;D [memories ;D]
