  1. crazy weather in scotland 2 weeks ago snow,, frid sat, sun, heatwave,, tonight very cold , here in the lothians,, good enough day,, but cold early morning, and cold evening long johns back on
  2. hi david,,first thing is ,,,hungry yb,s birds wont fly,, in my opinion routine is best for yb,s, excercised and fed same time each day, if at all poss, a fair balance is needed, in feeding, after all, their still growing, so they do need a well balanced diet, if let out same time each evening, then called in the same time each evening, [altered as they fly longer],, and given a good diet of w/hood with added maples and added barley, when they leave the barley,, stop feeding, , , in the morning just some barley, they should only pick at this , then when they leave some, stop feeding, then when kept in all day, this should put an "edge" on them, they should begin to want to fly well, ready for their evening meal,, good luck
  3. your bang on davy,,,,,,,this was the case last sat
  4. dont think it would contribute to a lot of smashes, but if continually released below this temp, would in my opinion, shorten the birds season
  5. happy birthday wee fifer,, keep up the training,,,,and the winning,, have a great day
  6. happy birthday to both, angela, and lindsay,
  7. with due respect mick, and excusing my ignorance, would the birds not need that first drink to be able to have that first feed, or am i reading you wrong,?, , or should i be reading it, once theve had their drink,,,, the first feed is the most important? birds i saw returning on saturday, [very, very hot], made straight for the drinker, they looked pretty tired,,,,, but when visiting the same loft approx 6pm that night, looked as though they had never been away, these birds were lightly fed approx an hour after arriving,[about 10- 11 am [4 to 5 hours fly] ,rested untill fed at 5pm, do you reckon this was the feed, or simply the re-heydration ?,,or both? on red cheq hens post i agree, i meant a nights rest, then out asap, the following morn. bath if poss,
  8. happy bithday duncan,, and happy birthday jimmy its mine to=day, yours tomorrow, makes you a day older than me,,, have a great day
  9. their actually great pics,, wonderful , to see them enlarge like this,,, good luck dooboy,, birds look great
  10. this dreaded yb sickness is certainly a bug bearer nowadays, and as you say, this hot weather can bring all sorts of problems, i remember the late jim biss saying that common, and pigeon flies are like hypodermic needles, and cause much disease, then followed on with secondary infections, [which is the real bug bearer],, keeping flies at bay, certainly helps, i find the old fashioned moth balls help, but there are many more modern ways,, another bug bearer is definitely stress, a lot of this can be contributed to overcrowding, and not enough fresh air, as you say, plenty fresh air and clean water [and clean water dishes], helps as well,,,, i often spray the loft each dry day, with a solution of virkon s,, a very good disinfectant,, its very hard to eradicate yb sickness, but at least ive found these things at least help minimize it
  11. great to see help given, , and greater still to see a big thanks given,, well done
  12. very interesting post tony,,,,,, makes you think of the money [being a tight scot] that is being spent by fanciers on the so-called many concoctions , that are supposed to improve stamina, make them race better, recover better/quicker, etc etc,, in my opinion rubbish,,,, in my opinion the best recovery is rest and clean water, mind you there will fanciers be doing salts to-day,,,,summer salts, the winners
  13. could take a few meanings out of that don,, most pigeon fanciers here in the u,k will certainly be active now[with their pigeons, hopefully] ,, , nearly 9 am, ,,,,their birds will be back soon
  14. pentland fed up at 6 30 , no wind ,light south wind predicted enroute good luck to all
  15. it seems as usual the weather in scotland is crazy , nothing unusual in that [snow last week , heat wave f/c today i note a lot of feds up early, i would assume this is to avoid the extreme heat f/cast for later on in the day. i should imagine many birds would be de-heydrated , flying in this heat, i am wondering what the the fanciers thoughts on electrolytes, /re-heydration salts, having read, many use these b4 a race, some after a race, some dont believe in them, i myself have have , in the past have used electrolytes, ,, honey,, glucose , pure water, etc etc , even milk,,,,, whats the fanciers views on best recovery , if any, after such a race in extreme heat?
  16. beautiful morning here in the lothians, blues skies , no cloud , warm, very little wind,, very, very light south , s , west,,,, good luck to all racing today

    Free.

well done sue,, two lovely yb,s ,, im sure you will sell the others no problem,,,good luck
  18. i see its under feeding tropicman,, ,, my thoughts are on feeding for the channel races would depend on where you were situated,, i,e distance etc,, in scotland the races would be well over 500 miles,, but nearer the south coast a good bit less, so the feeding , in my opinion would differ,, but wherever your situated, the main thing is fitness
  19. welcome to the forum wujot,, look forward to your posts
  20. just for the record,, i remember "old hands" "corresium capsules" [yellow oval capsules] these were for respiratory probs and contained furolizadone,, these were stopped for some reason, you could by them over the counter years ago, any one know why these were put off the market?
  21. well done dave,, they would learn more in this two hours than if they had done it in a minute lol,,, i would agree with the above post,, as you only have a few yb,s , just take it easy with them, build their confidence up slowly, best make sure they have learned to drink from the basket first, and gain confidence in the basket , without getting stressed, good luck
  22. quite a few new members , welcome all, look forward to your posts,, and hope you enjoy the forum

    Darkness

usually the spring equinox , the 21st april, is about the the last time for putting race yb,s on the darkness system to ensure a full body moult and retain all nest flights,, then on full day light hours on the longest day, in june [summer soltice] allthough in my opinion these would be better on natural, it might be , easier/handier for you to put them among the others for this short time, i dont think it would do much harm,, good luck,
