  1. pigeons will get used to most anything that ass. with feeding time,, a bell , a rattle of a tin of grub, a whistle even just your own voice , so really the choice would be yours , personally i have never tried the flashing lights , but would prefer the birds being used to my own voice as this can be used to calm the birds inside the loft providing they have confidence in my voice making them tamer therefore less stressfull
  2. well we can at least keep them to a minimum
  3. these classes seem fine to me [no handling classes though ;D ;D ;D]
  4. this was a great idea :)
  5. i know that wiley,,im kidding you ;D ;D ;D but would be willing to put this up, to add a little spice to it [maybe get others ;D] only prob is,,when money is involved , can lead to arguements ,so in my opinion would be better kept at a minimum
  6. really to be honest i would rather save my money [you can get as good free ;D] have you still got pic of bird that layed the golden egg of mine ;D ;D ;D if so put it up ;D ;D ;D
  7. you trying to hint wiley ;D ;D ;D i would be willing to offer winner £10 in each class [think there was about 8 classes ,,am i right ] [ hope theres only two now ;D ;D ;D, only kidding ;D] only if the forum could select a few independant judges ,,and the poll just for fun
  8. are we going for an online show again this year??
  9. do you get" thermals" over water ,like on land? [serious, would like to know]
  10. :X :X :X :X :X ;D ;D ;D
  11. :) happy birthday chrissy :) hope you got plenty pressies :)
  12. i think if the guy lost the yb off the loft as a baby, he wouldnt be able to trust it again as it would return to you, i wouldnt blame the pigeon in this circumstance ,,,,, but if the bird was lost in a race after being trained and it couldnt return to its old loft in my opinion the bird would be worth nothing and not worth putting for stock,,, whereas alfs did work its way back and probably learned a lot of experience in doing so
  13. not quite with you dunc :-/
  14. another pigeon nut ;D ;D ;D,,,in fact two pigeon nuts ;D ;D ;D they used to put the lib time in the village shop window [no computers then ;D] sometimes a bit late [when birds were due ;D ;D;D] one pigeon nut had motor bike ,offered the other a" backy "[a lift] rushed to his loft first ,,,,,no passenger on back :-/ :-/ :-/,,,,took the bend too quick he fell off ;D ;D ;D about a mile back ;D ;D ;D none the worse for it, but never forgot it [off course this wasnt me either and the other wasnt stu either ;D ;D ;D]
  15. yes i think this is different ,, just because the bird cost a lot of money [no offence to owner] is no reason to keep it for stock ,, personally i would rather have alfs , whether he paid nothing or a hundred pounds,, its now found out how to get over difficulties and allthough looking ok now , i would surmise it would it would have a rough time of it at some time , and learned a lot,,and got home
  16. pigeons do not like flying over water , but if forced to, and the weather perfect , will do it ok, my thoughts would be the pigeon would take the" near" shortest route over sea.,,,but they would do it if the weather was favourable and,,would take a special pigeon to compete
  17. quite right alf theres many a yb made its way back and turned out a good pigeon [sometimes amazing how they can make their way back about march april ,the following year as if they sense its breeding season and nature makes them home to the place they were born ] anyone else had this?? [one way of helping the price of grub through the winter ;D ;D ;D]
  18. maybe quite a few lady fanciers as well ;D ;D ;D good luck at show
  19. yip spot on ,,but double it ,if decent ventilation ,,,we all keep far to many pigeons per air space [having them out each day and all doors windows open ,in my opinion helps] these were the reccomendations of the late david palmer the bhw vet
  20. my brother in law is excactly the same , fairly bad asthmatic , hes able to go in to the aviary, but not the loft ,,so i think putting it down to "plenty fresh air movement of air in the loft " is quite right
  21. ive had yb,s back early the following year that have made excellent pigeons [one in particular ] when the advice i got was" cull it ,ittl never be any good"
  22. like many things theres a happy medium ,, it is my beleive if you have closed in lofts ,heaters lights etc , no good ,,,,pigeons will adapt to humidity levels [if they have the constitution] if pigeons can get a fly each day , using their respiratory system ,lungs, heart etc etc this , along with decent ventilation ,and a clean loft [2 inches of droppings under the perches would provide too much humidity and stale air ,and dampness] ,, proper amount of pigeons per air space is a must [half to one cubic meter per bird depending on ventilation , is quite suffice,, pigeons up north start racing later than pigeons down south [and still to early ] it would be easy to" false" condition a bird to win a 60 mile race in the begginning of april by false means ,,,but how long would this condition last ? if your black minerals are dry in a galley pot at the back of the loft ,,your spot on ,, were now guilty of breeding softies
