  1. sttsp ,, just wondered if it could be anything to do with songbird trust ???? which im a member off , but really looks to be a shot in the dark :-/
  2. i used to do 9am till 5pm but agree with merlin , theres no need to breed these too early as it is dark anyway in dec, jan,, [just spending extra cash on grub ;D] thats the point of the system, and as said b4 , no matter what hours you do, you still get the odd one throwing a flight
  3. ill leave it for the moment , [wont open it[ but see if anyone has had the same, maybe later ??? strange :-/
  4. yes, i was thinking that merlin,, kinda strange e,mail to get :-/
  5. has anyone else received an e mail headed,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, sttsp fw hawk action alert. to undisclosed recipent. please help by reading the attach. alert, and sending e.mails to help stop the use of hawks to deter pigeons. ihavent opened the attach, yet , but wondered if i should ,, anyone any advice or has anyone received the same?
  6. thats 10 days now david, i should say his chances now are good ,lets hope hes up and flying soon ,best of luck
  7. the complete opposite to the darkness system where on this system the birds have a full body moult but hold their flights ,,,,,,,,the lightness system , is early bred ybs on daylight hours , with , say, 18 hours of daylight , these birds have a full moult , imcluding their flights b4 racing ,im sure some of the lightness system fanciers would explain in detail
  8. good post tony, i used to try a few different things, methods , motivations, in fact try anything ;D,,,,,but at the end of each year i would write in my wee book ;D not going to do that again , maybe try that though ,, that ones def .out etc etc etc ;D a bit mad really,, but it worked ;D
  9. this is up to the webmaster
  10. the reason the rspb can release sea eagles is that they are native to brittain. the rspb dont beleive the eagle owl is native to britain [i wonder why?] lots of ornithologists disagree with this and reckon they are , but the rspb are the boss :-/
  11. could have something in that harky,, if these are successfull in breeding in brittain , they will be the largest predator in the uk
  12. sea eagle feed mainly on fish ,, 8ft wing span , became extinct in britain in 1981 rspb trying to re-introduce them ,, no danger to pigeons
  13. couldnt agree more, ,,just a young bird yet [had one win a 98 mile race 400 birds 9 years old same year scored from avaranches in france over 500 miles
  14. i see gangsters chit chat mod too good luck mick
  15. old theorie ,," saying",,, pair your birds up,," on craw sunday" meaning , mate your birds up when you see the crows building their nests ,taking twigs etc
  16. stick in david,, if hes eating, and drinking , thats half the battle good luck
  17. very true sammy ,an excellent post
  18. peronally i wouldnt worry about, so called" breeds" theres good and bad in them all, i would tend to get pigeons for the type of races you would like to excell in, pigeons that have won well through a few generations , good management gets the best out of good birds , befriending a genuinely good flier ,and learning every move he makes ,taking everything in, is often better than books or videos good luck to you.
  19. just read the whole story,, fantastic,, sounds as though the bird is improving ok, [good to hear the bird is yours officially ] a big thanks to stu willcox , it will be great to hear that the bird is back to his old self and paired to one of his champion hens , lets hope theres a great happy ending to this story [sounds good up to now] its one we will certainly never forget on this forum , kindness and passion from all [well nearly all ;D] well done to david [invalid] and stu willcox :) [youll have to get a name for him now david ,hes now quite a famous pigeon
  20. im quite sure when the owner hears of your story hell let you keep the bird , transfer the bird, then hes officially yours ,, explain the story and the postings on this forum good luck
  21. this is very true ,, loft better closed at night , a weasel stoat or mink will make a worse job than a cat and ,,,as gangster says , cats can become very crafty , allthough a usefull pigeon entry system its not infallable
  22. good post paulo, sometimes the pigeon is allmost tells you when its at its peak, condition , it often behaves differently than it usually does ,handles like" cork" id maybe just add to your main points on fitness , that loft management plays a big part. ie knowing how to set a bird up for a certain race , feeding for certain races , theres so many different ways and means which makes the sport so interesting, but a very interesting post

    Training.

i dont mean to keep disagreeing paulo but there are more yearlings lost this early in the season and the early first races [ even allthough theve flown 280 miles as ybs ] maybe you would be better splitting them up , if you have a look at the top fliers in your area , youll find theyll be saving their birds for the bigger and better races later in the year , but with pigeons theres allways exception to the rule so i do really wish you well , but maybe worth just keeping that in mind

    Training.

to be honest paulo, it is a sweeping statement , but neverthe less true , asking me about sending to the first race without training the answer would be no,,but i used to just train spare hens, about 4 or 6 , these birds were trained hard , many times won , even topped the fed ,,,,,,,,,,,,but these birds went just 4 races then finished for the season ,, then came out the team of widowhoood cocks in the middle of may , when it was warmer , sometimes 3 tosses then in to 150 miles , these cocks rattled in right up to and beyond 365 miles , the odd one scoring in nationals at 5 to 600 miles , but i would have different birds paired later especialy for these races , these birds would be at least 2 years old and only have 3 or 4 races , then plenty training in july, i learned my lesson many many years ago, thinking the same as you , i trained them in early march, done well first couple of races , then a whole team were ruined for the rest of the season,, pigeons hate cold east winds and will not benefit from it, please beleive me, its a long season and their not machines
