If you have a good Chairmen and a good Secretary then look after them and support them. If you fail them then you run the risk of having people with their own agenda take up those posts which has been the ruin of many once great clubs. To the Chairmen and Secretaries out there, dont be too quick to let those muppets take over. By the time you say I told you so it is often too late!

A very interesting thread. Having raced for 40 years I can remember the good returns often referred to. I also wonder if racing has evolved to suit the fast maturing sprint / middle distance birds. The good old 500 / 600 mile birds are often slow to mature and therefore easily lost with the number and distance of yb races. Another issue we face today is amalgamation over larger areas to help fill transporters which helps to drag young inexprienced birds all over the countryside

Never seen yb sickness since I started jagging at 3 weeks for PMV. Cider vinegar can be useful is a crop fungal infection is suspected. Just a teaspoon to a ltr of water

One eye cold (the left eye normally) is a sign of a more serious problem namely chlamydia (ornithosis) which you can also catch from the birds. I use an avian vet that prescribes aureomycin which is cheap but still the treatment of choise for this problem

Thot it was just me. The losses this year have been high even at club level. Makes me wonder what is to be raced next season. Yet many will still race their ybs to extinction. Hope we see a few more back from France over the next few weeks.

P M V is a problem that we have been seeing for over 20 years. The one and only time I had this trouble it was with a pigeon I bought at a clearance sale of a very well respected top fancier. Now some 8 years later I still have the bird at stock and he has produced several top birds to win from 500 plus miles. What I did was (with vets advice) to put him in a hutch 3ft x 2ft x 2ft with a thick bed of shavings and food and water. It takes tlc for 8 to 10 weeks but it will come out of it. The bird will be more prone to twiching when you get close to it so give it quietness. I now vaccinate all yb's at 3 weeks old. Many believe this also kick strarts the immune system. Interestingly I have not seen YB sickness either from that day to this. If you do end up having to dispose of birds then put my name down to provide a pair of younsters. I wish you well.

If you ever decide to start again there will always be a pair or two of youngsters for you. Just let me know

If this race is open to all of the UK then we already would have the problem of distance measurement variations between different organisations. The SHU for whatever reason seems to be the odd one out when it comes to distances and I would not expect fanciers racing to the north of England accepting that SHU distances seem to be quite a few miles less than RPRA distances from the same racepoint. This problem does not only affect fanciers in Scotland using different bodies for supply of measurements.

Would agree with the others but feel that Scott Gibsons letter which prohibits the people who fell foul of the SHU taking part robs the sport of the chance to mend some fences here in Scotland
