I would look at two different issues. The hen going off as discribed is not so uncommon if she has a calcium deficiency when eggs are being produced. There are many things available to help here. Grit and minerals are a must and also liquid calcium added to the drinking water is helpful especially in older birds. A little milk would also bring her round in a very short time. As to the cocks sudden demise, my first thought is slug pellets. If any have been put down or even introduced on a plant recenly brought in then beware.

Normally around 6 weeks or so if bred in season. I am aways suspicious if the first flight is not gone by 9 weeks.

I hope we get good racing and that there will be plenty of birds to be phoned in

Most of us who had the pleasure of knowing the old gentleman are not surprised that he was snubbed. It just shows the type of people we are dealing with. He would have wanted nothing to do with those concerned. He is a great loss to the sport he loved and excelled in. An all time great.

we dont advertise our sport. Most kids have never heard of pigeon racing. We need to get back to basics. If local clubs took a stall at gala days etc then perhaps kids would see what happens and what they are missing

Keep them in or at least on a short chain till mid April. The sparrowhawk will then be out of your way for a while when she is sitting eggs

If younsters are dying in the shell, salmonella is another possible cause. A good vet is your best bet

Birds, though tame in the loft, are normally less so out in the open. When a tame one is on your hand in the loft it will normally fly as soon as you step outside. Although tame birds can bring much pleasure, I don't overly encourage so that if I quickly pop into the loft for a moment when about to set out for the evening in fancy dress, they don't land on my shoulder covering me in sh!t

Be carefull with maize. If grain has to be left in the open, say in transit on a ship, the maize is normally picked for this as it does not show deterioration as much as other grains. It still goes off though and can cause this problem. Thankfully the birds are sorted when a little vinegar is added to the water.

Stand a brick on end against the back of the nest box. The hen can get up out of the road of the cock and there is only room for one pigeon. Saves the hen from any damage

Alf Baker made a decent name racing north. Whats your beef? Wiltshire your at isn't it? Still well over 600 to Lerwick. Have to go see a man. I agree this race could be a way of taking politics out of the sport. Catch you later.

When did you get back Yoyo. Reads like you not on the wind up for a change.

What distance should they be capable of?

We all know that Auld Hammy deserves better. Let people figure out for themselves who the wrong uns are. It was inspirational to see so many top fanciers at the funeral and it was a great celebration of the life of a wonderful old man who had been a great ambassador for our sport. The amount of coverage in last weeks pigeon papers says it all. Those who missed him out will be seen for who they really are.

Seems there is good prize money for this one and a lot of interest is being shown. I wish all likely candidates good luck.

The Yoyo is a very good friend of mine who seems to know what is going on and calls a spade a shovel. He can do blunt and can make enemies as quickly as friends. He is abroad for the next few weeks and will be unhappy to miss Jimmy Hamiltons funeral. -
On Saturday last he looked as well as I had seen him in years and I told him so as he enjoyed a half pint. Today he is with his true love Nan who passed away a lot of years ago. I was privileged to know them both. In the struggle of life you meet few the likes of Auld Hammy.

No chance. Have not spoken to the bloke since his outburst and am in no hurry to do so either. Enjoy and hear you when you get back. -

You still here? Thought you were due back over? Thread WAS going well until someone launched a missile! Nice one Yoyo. You know that some are pointing the finger at me? I wonder why eh? -

You sound fairly happy with yesterday Yoyo. Duccy was on the old committee. Is he still? I would have thought not from your comments. Sounds as though some reasonable men have been elected. Lets hope it helps. -

Hello Red Yoyo. Who was giving grief? Anyone I know? -
the straw that broke the camels back was the £11.50 rise in fees. If you are prepared to stay on I will pay the £11.50

Ask your vet for ferty-gel. It is used on cattle to bring into season. It is expensive but you only want one vial. 0.2 ml sub cut same as for paramyxo injection. Do a fortnight before mating and see how he goes. It often works
