thanks chaps.....................I think I am only left with option of getting some young birds in............. which I really didnt want to have to do. I've enjoyed the breeding and wanted to breed the neucleus of my own team from the stock I have.......and even test some of my loggies and repido's out on the race circuit.... Sometimes I think I'll never get a race!!!!! ...I had the same last year when I got an 20 odd bird YB team together...and lost the lot on a training toss!!!!...that nealry made me pack up the idea all together..... we'll keep plodding on...................but Ive not been blessed with much luck upto know!!....... perhaps I'll stick to what I no and just keep the whites!!!! -

GUTTED.....................Unfortunately I have suffered a nasty predatory attack on my YB section on Sunday, which resulted in the death of all of first round including 18 YBs ad 3 stock hens which were left as feeders...... :'( The attack happened an hour of so after I'd feed them....... I went back to install the new drinkers I'd made out of some empty koi carp pellet tubs...and was met with the carnage.... I believe this may have been a mink...........as there were no visible signs of entry other than a small hole dug underneath the flight...... whatever entered butchered the lot...... heads and feet bitten off crops bit through.......backs and tails gorged out. Whats made it worse was that this was to be my first years racing, which I've been really looking forward to ...... the birds I'd bred, by my own admission were crackers....... so now it looks like I'll be giving that a miss this year, as I've not really got time to crack another round off, what with my release business as well.....thats why I started early!!!!! :-/ :-/ I supose thats a stark warning for everyone, not to be complacent about predetors getting in...... :-/ :-/ ??) ??)

-

-
lovel gesture that is..........good on you. How does one enter the draw??
-
my point entirely :)
-
read my suggestion above..........with a hen locked in his box...the cock can look,,,but not touch........... very fustrating when you've been stuck in section with the boys for 3 months do you see!!
-
my first loft was made out of a large potatoe crate....cost em nowt..and chicken wire I knicked for the aviary of an empty council house. I will breed you a few pairs to get you started.......just dont be a defeatest. Only thing got in hurry is kids mate...get a few birds this year...breed a few ..get to know your birds..ask questions....LEARN....... seed is cheap..... its a shame that so many people in this day an age see money an obsticle in these materialistic days we live in ...pigeon keeping needn't be expensive...its a working mans hobby. If you can afford to race then its no big deal......... breed a babbie or two...and let a friend race for you!!
-
perhaps it would have been easier to vote ifthe names of the entrants were put underneath their photograph...rather that having to go back to the old thread in members to see who is who?
-
That is the general idea......come semptember the cocks and hens are split into 2 section. then you can decide during the moulting period what birds have done what and selectively put good to good..or what ever.... The simulataneous putting together of your pairs should in theory allow them to pair , lay, hatch, and wean a round off at relively the same time.... this is a must if breeding a YB racing team......or indeed 2 teams to race with....no good having a natural loft if you're racing as young will be cracked off willy nilly, with no real organisination .....birds will all differnt ages.....traingin will be difficult as a result.. No different to how I do it only I tease my birds and get them furstrated...this way when you put them together tney are more incline dto get on with the business of breeding than sitting pretty...looking out of the stock loft Its these similar incentives that are applied by racing men to gear their birds to come home quicker from a race...whether it be to a nest full of babbies..(natural)...or to a hen / cock in a box......widowhood Its no special formula Mg.........just a way of getting orgainsed...and making as little work as yourself as you can;)

as mentioned in previous thread, I find the following the best way to match pairs and get them going at the same time:- Split the cock and hens into 2 sections ...allow the cocks to settle and take a nest box of their own.......when the said cock is roosting and defending his box...pen the chosen hen in one side for a week..feed her and water her in there. If after a week, if it seems as though they have taken to each other....reverse the proceedure....and lock the cock in one side of his box. If the hen as taken to the cock she will return back to the 'said' nest box to be with him...after a coupl of days....pen them in together and wait the the magic to happen ;D

piantball gun......................... (evil)(evil)

the nutitional content would be ok...but I would feed a pigeon mash....... I do however give my birds small layer pellets, pre hatching, but only very small quantities
