Hi Ronnie - Just out of interest, that was my guess too ! By the way, no relation to me ! If you want to become a scribe, just give either magazines a call, I am sure they are always after new material Cheers, Simeon.

Hi Ronnie, I am a scribe for the RP - most scribes put in the info they are given re birdage, number sent etc...... If people want to blow smoke up their own A***s then that is up to them, I know I for one don't and never will. I put every result I receive in the article. In my opinion people who are purchasing birds from other should be asking the question re birdage numbers, club members etc - it is not up to the scribe to find out, surely. Thery just wouldn't have the time. I have sold pigeon's myself (on the back of our performances) not what I have written in an article. - Every pigeon I have sold wouldn't have been put in the paper, If I didn't rate the pigeon myself (testomany to that is the number of call I receive about our birds perfomances) Do you know, I very rarely, if ever get asked 1) how we have raced that season 2) has the particlur bird(s) bred anything - whixh is very surprising, as it is the first questions I always ask when I am buying. P.S I know that you weren't having a go at my articles, but I have an idea who it is!

Hi Tammy, Which part of Derbyshire are you moving too?
-
Thanks David, I know what you mean. The hen should be fine when she moults out, but obviously she is finished for racing this year - not to worry as she if bred well enough.

We had a young bird reported on Tuesday by a non fancier in Warsop, Nottinghamshire - it is about 20 miles from where we fly. We lost the young hen in its first race on Saturday from Kettering The charming lady said that the young bird was ok, but had lost its tail, he husband had been out walking their dog and had found it walking in the road. My dad went to collect the bird yesterday and was horrified to find that the youngster had lost it's tail because some nice person had decided to cut it's tail off, but, the story doesn't end there the TOOL who did this had also cut down all the flights in both wings Why are people like this, I cannot comprehend. I phoned the lady last night and told her what had happened and she was horrified with what had happened to the poor thing, I thanked her for saving the birds life and als reminded her that not all people out there are like this. One thing is for certain if I were to find out who had done it, they would certainly be losing more than their tail

Spot on Dovescot
-
I would probably think that is it Paramyxo, BUT as Dovescot said it could be a number of Ailments - If I were you I would contact Retford Poultry - Get the droppings tested and have some blood tests taken (blood tests are the only way you can detect a virus) - In the meantime, feed the other birds a light feed with electrolight in the water. Some birds can get over Paramyxo (that is fact) - and after they have recovered can go on to breed without passing the virus onto their offspring. - What I would do is see if the birds recover, isolate the ones that do look bad, vaccinate the others, then see how it goes. Best of luck - trust me you are better having paramyxo, rather than, paratyphoid or Adeno Virus, these could wipe you out!

Hi Mate, you are welcome to one mate - he is a cracking cock, he is a 3 year old that won right from being a young bird. Last year he went over the water to Poitiers which is 474 Miles to us and came on the day scoring in the club and fed. This year (2 Weeks ago) he went back to Poitiers and scored in the fed, he was our second pigeon behind his brother that won the race (club). He had 13 hrs on wing and looked as if he had been no where, that is why we decided to put him to 527 Miles, and was as confident as I could be that he would come on the day, and thankfully he proved me right ;) By the way his breeding is a Janssen with a bit of Jan Aarden in him.

What is the best all purpose antibiotic?
Simeon Turner replied to a topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
Josh, I wouldn't second guess and just give antibiotics bacuase they are 'puffed up' Get the droppings tested and a few swabs taken, by a vet / poultry specialist, if treatment is required they will prescribe the correct antibiotics if required. DON'T go down the road of blind treating - it will end in tears -
Basketting tonight for 1st young bird race has been cancelled duec to dodgy weather forecast tomorrow. Will be basketting tomorrow night for a Sunday race.

Liberated today 18/07/2008 - 6:30am in no wind, turning west southwest on route. 527 Miles to our loft (hope we get one on day, sent 6) Good luck everyone.
-
Thanks Vallance, enjoyed doing the write up - Dave has an excellent knowledge of pigeons and pigeon racing in my opinion.
-
Young bird losses (not in any particular order) 1 - Quality of pigeons 2 - Health (including pigeons that are out there that have been doctored up, when really they should be in the bin) 3 - Clashing 4 - Hawks in certain areas 5 - Weather 6 - Non coordination of Feds / Amals (why send 6 transporters down from the same area to the same racepoint and have seperate liberations, strength in numbers and all that). 7 - Feed, not giving the birds enough fuel in their tanks if they make a mistake, with the way we feed these days (more carbs / fats and less proteins), they have one shot at getting home - if they don't they don't have anything in the tank to help them the next day. Just my thoughts, although I think the list is endless
-
Both for me, BHW for the adverts. RP for the write ups (and I am not just saying that as I am a scribe) - I mean the loft reports etc.
-
Hi mate, The pigeon will be fine - you wont need to cut the ring off, keep it quiet and within a couple of weeks the swelling and bruising will go down.

The oldest we have at the moment is a 17 year old Van Den Bosche cock that bred winners for us for fun. He has been blind for the past 6 years!!!!! - still got a box (on the floor) an hen and still handles like a 2 year old, wish he was still filling. The oldest we have ever had lived to 22 years old when the old lad died.............. we got him when he was 10 - he filled upto 16 year old.

Someone out there is going to get a bargain - cracking looking birds CPB - if I wasn't reducing in numbers I would definately give those crackers a try.
-
For me it would be 'fit to win' by Wim Peters and the 'flying vet' by Colin Walker. The Janssen story is also fantastic - for reference etc

Fly pigeons with my Dad in Sheffield (where I was born) Live in Chesterfield with my Missus and kids

We bought some Jan Aardens from them, mature birds not younsters. They have all bred us winners over the channel upto 527 miles on the day - they have also crossed very well also - excellent birds and very reasonably priced too.
