Walter swanston Posted March 17, 2016 Report Posted March 17, 2016 I was cleaning my lofts at 11am this morning, the pigeons were circling overhead, some on the gravel in front of the lofts when the adjacent crow colony started to make a dreadful noise.I came out the loft and found a pigeon with hawk talon injuries on it wing close up on the shoulder the crows were going mad clearly they had objected to the presence of the resident sparrow hawk and chased it off its prey.If I had not intervened the crows would have made short work of the traumatised pigeon.

greenbar Posted March 17, 2016 Report Posted March 17, 2016 we feed them most days, they make a good early warning sign, same with the gulls,
Roland Posted March 17, 2016 Report Posted March 17, 2016 Worst problem than s/h if not careful. You can 'Shift' a hawk easily. Crows damage is prolonged and far worst if they are a mind. bWill wipe out the y/b's when out - or will go into loft - when of a mind.
Waterboy Posted March 17, 2016 Report Posted March 17, 2016 Brother let doos oot within 5 minutes one got rattled outside compound canny do any thing out side pound basterd
cemetary Posted March 17, 2016 Report Posted March 17, 2016 Just know, the hen should be already nesting, its the hens that aren't paired up people are having big problems with, unless you are out in about the birds in the garden, you will do nothing to stop them attacking the birds. You cant let them out and leave them for a couple of minutes, its getting worse, and if you get scattered, then you have problems from the Aerial Bandits, even though some are going to nest. Unless BIG LIZZIE, does something about it FAST, am afraid we just have to plotter on ourselves lads.

No time is a good time when the hen is on the hunt, the only thing I would say is, if you have birds out, be around them just incase, you have a chance if it nails one in the garden .
William Reid Posted March 19, 2016 Report Posted March 19, 2016 All the neighbors around me have bird tables to feed what doo men call the wee birds . I have a bird table that feeds the sparrow hawk and thay love it. .
