Ian McKay Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 My thoughts on trying to improving our liberations and racing we need to get our house in order before throwing stones at others Would a specialist weather / meteorologist help and where do we get one interested in pigeons? How do we help race controllers? Should we have a training course for them? Would it help? Where do we get an honest and realistically priced person to fight our case with BOP (we need a great team of dedicated honest people) Can one team work properly for England / Scotland / Wales / Ireland Are our method of committees correct or do they just work for there own interests? Are our officials intelligent enough for the job? Are our conditions on board transporters correct ie temperatures / air flow / light / ventilation / feeding / watering Are our numbers in crates correct? Most transporter run 60% empty so will giving birds slightly more room help? Are birds given enough time to recover from the journey to the race point? Or otherwise Are race programs for youngsters correct or do we play catch up for the Nationals? Are race programs for Old birds correct or do we play catch up for the Nationals? Should we insist on all youngsters having a training toss or 2 from the transporter before racing with an overnight stop so they can learn how to drink from the vehicle? Are we as fanciers failing in our duty to basket train our youngsters properly? Are we observant enough as to birds being put into race panniers Ill or in poor condition? I have observed an increase of Quill mite and Lice on birds is this a problem? i.e. are fanciers treating there birds correctly? Are we as pigeon fanciers aware of the condition of our birds should we run training classes maybe with a vet on how to look after our birds

Novice Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 Ian I think your post has too much meat on it for general discussion. I think there will be so many points of view that it will be difficult to draw conclusions. It may be better to break it into smaller more specific areas. I do know that the met office will give you a more specialised forecast for a small charge. They measure parameters other than those contained in the public report but we need to be able to tell them what parameters are important to us.
philg50 Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 How do you help race controlers ,make sure they have people they can discuss weather and conditions at points on the birds route home ie ,they just make calls on phone,as for training them in my opinion that is an insult to lads that are doing there best ,now i will put another thing into the equation should we have to vaccinate a bird more than once ,and does everyone do it? ,and how many fowk have young bird sickness then put them away to a race to soon .I have not put young birds yet and after Sat i am in two minds 8000+ rings must have been issued in the fed this year there have been 2 races 1000 birds race 1 800 birds race 2 ??

peter dempsey Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 its not the birds that the BOP actually catch its the damage they do to the frightened birds who would fly through a brick wallto escape the BOP? some of them end up hundreds of miles off course ? what chance have these birds of facing back into the wind for another 200 miles you can paint over the cracks what ever way you like, our first line of defence must be to protect our birds from these attacks then everything else will fall into placeno matter how well you train your birds to drink or eat in the basket if PERCY hits them on route ? and he will again and again and againwhat chance have these young birds got of making it home in good time the answer is NONE I know we will be talking about this problem until there is no one left in the fancy this is my reply to the problem please don't take it any other way I am not trying to offend any one on siteregards peter

chas21 Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 well said I brought this up many times at my old clubs agms but was a lone voice regarding percy I really think we will need to stop racing as we know it for one or two years and let percy eat something else

maverick Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 Some great points you have brought up Ian but this has been going round in circles for years and still nothing done I am sure the late stan bonnington from Loanhead met with ministers with save our sport and here we are years later and in a worst state Instead of all the cash we as a sport raise for other charities started to raise cash to help ourselves the charities we help each year might just wonder and come on side with us
peter dempsey Posted July 27, 2015 Report Posted July 27, 2015 I do understand where you are coming from Ianbut there is no votes in this for the Prime Minister and he, or no one else, will come to our aid ? end of story so we have 2 choices lock up our birds and leave the sport or do something about it ourselves IMO its illegal for a man to stand by and watch his birds been butchered and do nothing about itif these BOP were attacking farmers sheep and killing them ??? how long would it take the farmer to protect his flock, not to long I assure you all, But then Farmers are very well organised where as we fanciers never pull together and nothing will change until we do just that pull pull togetherregards to all peter
