BIGPETE Posted April 11, 2014 Report Posted April 11, 2014 Hi Guys, Looking to build a YB loft in the next few weeks. How high is it ideal to have it raised off the ground? Also, where it is going currently it is grass/lawned area. Would I be ok just stacking paving slabs levelled off to support it? Or would I need to go as far as laying some hardcore and compacting it like I was laying a patio? Obviously the less ball ache the better. But I don't want it to be wonky as a 3 legged horse after 6 months Not gonna be a big loft 12ftx8ft max. Am not the most technical guy with building structures, so want to make sure the supports/footing are ok. Any info much appreciated. Thanks, Pete

walterboswell59 Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 the higher off the ground the better pete stops vermin going under to nest they like it low so its dark id make it over two foot high then you have some where to store baskets also keeps your traps high so cats have trouble jumping up to them good luck with it m8
BIGPETE Posted April 12, 2014 Author Report Posted April 12, 2014 Cheers Walt, how does the law lay in terms of how high you can go before your neighbours can be *expletive removed* and complain.
walterboswell59 Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 Cheers Walt, how does the law lay in terms of how high you can go before your neighbours can be *expletive removed* and complain.suppose that depends on the neighbours pete and what your blocking i had to take a loft down because a neighbour went to the council and said the loft was blocking her view the only view the *expletive removed* had was into my sisters back window but they still made me take it down if your on good terms with the neighbours go and ask them if will cause a problem first if they say its ok take a wee box of chocs round to the lady of the house as a wee thankyou works wonders and keeps them sweet

Tony C Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 Pete, look up on your local council website, they should have building regulations on there.

Guest nephilim Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 Hey Pete. Hardcore and gravel would be ideal. But my local housing authority doesn't allow such a base! So I've built my lofts on raised wooden framework, such as used for decking, plenty of clips on you tube. My lofts are about a foot of the ground, which gives plenty of air flow to preserve the life of the wood, and let the cats take out any vermin. I got a roll of wire from flea bay and stapled it on the outside and inside making it safe for the birds from anything coming from under the loft, not that I let them walk around the lawn. Left a small gap at the back to allow said moggies to earn their corn keeping vermin away. I hope to run a thread on here about my build, which was going to be a full 24x6 three section. But due to cutbacks etc. I'm using current sheds and converting the fronts and swapping the roofs from apex to forward pent! A bigger task than I first thought. It doesn't matter how good or bad your skills are, time and patience is the key and the old adage of measure twice cut once. Most small timber or reclaim yards will cut timber for you, just take a good drawing of what you want and ask their advice about everything. Good luck and keep us updated.
