walterboswell59 Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 Yes STB, you are 100% RIGHT. In today's climate it IS the fact that one can't afford to lose one. A fly away losing 30 and getting 23 reported at £35 a throw would make my eyes water that's for sure. Youngster on basic wage with mortgage and a couple of lad a a girl wanting what other children are having and a wife saying it has to be so etc. takes a sizeable chore in earning every week. Cutting clothe to make ends meet is bad enough without the wife saying YOUR hobby is unimportant and a waste of money! Then to top it ignorant gits spouting 'Well if they can't afford it then they shouldn't have them....' means more pack up and many more won't start ... then the ignorant gits spout about the costs of sending birds and club fees etc. The whinge and moan moan about the price of a bag of corn.... Breed a 100 youngsters or so to make up for their losses ... and curse and whinge none stop. It is the simple reality why the governing bodies - in my opinion - are lenient and turn a blind eye. These people needs common sense and reality to prevail and a helping hand with tolerance, not lambasted by those that should know better. Yes I agree the ignorant git like the twit spouting it isn't his bird wants to be told it will be sent by courier C.O.D. which may also incur over night housing costs etc. So yes it it depends a lot on attitude of the owner I know. But we can ALL help and SHOULD help each other. WE can all send and release a bird after a few days fed and watered. It costs nowt and may well keep a fancier in the sport. The more in.... the less the costs. Most have, and it has always been the vast majority, in the 56years I've been associated with the sport, a fact that the 'Working Class' are the main stay and grass roots of the fancy. The vast majority - who cared about there domestic duty's struggle some what. BUT they USED to pull together in the main. Never mind this 'Bully for me and tough muck to him' attitude, the one-upmanship etc. This sport needs more than ever for ALL to help and encourage those finding it tough to stay in the game … let alone enticing more to join us. Yes 'andyyy' should be peeved and rightly so. Yes I believe that particular so – called fancier wants sorting … but don't let us CONTINUE to tar all with the same brush!well said roland
gulkie Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 I usually get a good few strays here in Moffat each season especially with young birds. After many strained phone calls over the years I usually feed and water them for a few days and then drive up toSouth Lanarkshire, probably about Abington and libertate from there. That's the right spirit Walter m8 ,well done .
geordie1234 Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 Every time I report a stray it seems to be more hassle than the last however I will keep on reporting. Any fancier that I get their pigeon in has no obligation to pick it up or pay for it to be picked up I would not force that on anyone as it's expensive... what I do with it is up to the individual

Roland Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 Good on yer geordie1234 I report. Always will. I also take note of the fanciers wishes. If asked to feed and water and then let up a few days later, no problem. If I can edge towards their' loft up the road then so be it. I also have had a few silly ones not answering etc. or silliness. But I also feel that not many like to state that they can't afford it etc. Embarrassed etc. So I feel good if I can be helpful in some way, or at least believe I am doing right by them and the so - called sport. I mostly travel to collect any reported if the fuel is less or about the same as a courier. It gives me and the wife a day out. Visit a loft and often make a friend or learn something. I remember only too well - not so long ago either - when I couldn't even afford to train my birds. I recall me dad, pleased as punch every so often, being able to send the birds on the train for a training toss. LIKE many more, and yet they were great club men. Always helping in any chore that came their way club night, be it basketing, clocks etc. etc. Most could fly a kite. My dad never won a race -- well one they set up for him lol A street race. Proud as punch forever. I think we should all remember we look the same sitting on the toilet. Remember - as we all know, NOT everyone is able or fortunate as one-selves. BUT they may well be in other club ways, and are part of the future of our dying sport. We can't afford to discriminate. Shoot ourselves in the foot. Remember too it is those very often that are at the foot of the ladder , the ones you are beating every week, that make the game for you ... without them NO club will function and a club isn't much joy racing against your selves. A little forethought and understanding is needed here surely. Again I'm not referring to ignorance or bad manner persons, but the fact is that a high percentage NOW can just about afford to race and keep pigeons ... not lose them. But losing them is part and partial of our sport unfortunately. Personally, I believe, the mass breeding to compensate losses doesn't help anyone!
