Ive tried this o.l.r and its a complete lottery imo. Its not a good gamble to me statisticly. The birds are very well looked after and are always in cracking nick BUT they don't get a chance to prove themselves imo. I said before I think they should have training tosses from only 100, 400 and 800 yards out into the sea to get the birds used to being libbed from a boat.Im positive this would help them get at least 50-60% ( instead of 10% )of their entry to the final race, which is exactly what everyone wants. This is not the hardest o.l.r as some say, it is a total game of chance which is a pity because the set up is superb. Anyway, as they say in the Dragons Den, for that reason Im out, but I wish all the British birds ( especially Scottish ) all the very best of luck. Youll need it :emoticon-0167-beer: :emoticon-0167-beer: :emoticon-0138-thinking: ps.Surprised some guys went back into this event after saying they wouldn't go near it again :emoticon-0138-thinking:

this year the first off shore training race is 5km into the sea, which I'm sure is the shortest I've witnessed so hopefully helps... :emoticon-0138-thinking:

hope so m8... some years we get skelpt from the off-shore training then the island training goes well, some years its the other way about... the first year I sent over 400 birds made it to the final :) once there in the air your in the hands of the gods as they say, could happen anywhere I expect... not a big % made it the final of the Scottish OLR last year :emoticon-0138-thinking:

I agree and the RPRA O.L.R had it tough also but over the last few years, the Arona has had without doubt the worst returns from their training tosses, a lot of these at very short distances too.

Depends what ye mean by hard Tam, the Arona isn't hard, it is a lottery with 100s of birds lost at silly distances.I would say the O.L.R that was held in the west section of Scotland a few years ago was a hard one to compete in. Birds homing and racing ability were tested whereas the Arona is a survival race, luck being a key factor. The best one loft race is the Algarve imo , the majority ( around 60%)of birds usually get to the main event which is flown from 500km. The returns from the main event have been superb also. This is only my opinion and I wish anyone who enters the Arona the very best of luck. :emoticon-0167-beer:

TRAINING 06... tomorrow... expected lib at 10.30am :emoticon-0157-sun:

good luck to all competitors, we are all 'in it to win it', regardless of the outcome of some of the training flights, no different from the pigeon game through out the world I expect where we all encounter some dodgy racing, after which the youngsters seem to steady themselves and some enjoyable racing is then experienced... Derby Arona not much different although the losses are heavy on occasions, the bravehearts will be there at the end! :emoticon-0123-party::emoticon-0167-beer:

Followed the 8th Training flight whilst at Blackpool, and to say my ar*e was twitching was an understatement! :emoticon-0136-giggle:

Very good training flight once again, but they were hit by falcons again, with a lot of late returns and 6 pigeons returning today...

My team of 15 were well burst up and wasn't looking good for a spell, but managed 11 home on the day of lib, 2 next day, and one last nite at 6.42pm which was DIAZEPAN 1 (phew... thank god!) so only one lost!

All the other Scots made it being entered by JOCK ROSS 7/7, Team DOOLANDERS 2/2, Team SEASHORE 1/1 :emoticon-0137-clapping:

well done lads, lets keep the flag flying :scotland: met up with John Bosworth and Jim Smith with there good ladies Arlene and Mary, in the Winter Gardens and we had a good blether about various pigeon topics including the DERBY ARONA OLR :emoticon-0157-sun: look forward to the Final lads, and hopefully all going well will be there this year, fingers crossed for some Scottish doos at the main event...
