After reading the post on Leicester and all the comments about where can and cannot win I have looked out a result I had from 1973. I have scanned part of the result shows Fed birdages.

The reason I have this result is that my entry was the very last on the result winning Tayside pools.

How times have changed first 50 were all from the Solway area.

Also Rennes, 1st Coldingham E1, 2nd Douglas Water W1, Kirkcaldy E2 4th Croy W2, by 20th Open East 11 positions, West 8 and South 1.

Nantes, also interesting 1st Open Dundee E1, 4th Open Irvine W1 the spread seems to suggest it was possible to win anywhere.

Don't see scan must to big file. If I have time later I will try to reduce size.

so where have the changes happened ?? quality of stock ? birdage amount (drag) ? or flying hazards ? or what ?? :emoticon-0138-thinking:

Only definite change from theses days are the race points, Rennes & Nantes were used for 50 / 60 years both lie due south of the mid point of the English south coast, they had plenty country in front of them to work up before any hills would start to have any influence.

Now that the race points are being moved further to the east giving an apparent distance advantage to the more West you are situated, as you get nothing for nothing, the birds are already on the east side of the country and the westerly birds have to work across.

What I am saying is use easterly race points don't be surprised if the easterly birds do percentage wise better.

The telling factor is the peregrine falcon and that our birds won't fly their natural route because of them case closed

anyone looking at all of the national results since the mid fifties will see the best spread of prizes has been achieved since the race points have moved east. Looking at one race and forming an opinion is not a fair view of what the reality has been.

Will we get a race tomorrow,?emoticon-0138-thinking.gif

If you don't then it will be Tuesday at the earliest as the forecast for England is horrible till then with rain across the whole of England and gale force winds, good luck George

I would take a guess that it was around this time that more fanciers concentrated on the so called sprint strains. This produced more speed, but the tried and tested distance birds became a bit watered down, therefore the birds have changed.

Peregrines have increased by an untold amount and primarily are based in the west. I know they have spread since then.

The entry from the west decreased due to the peregrine threat, therefore the drag to the east had more effect.

The route was changed to the east to avoid the peregrines, so the birds tend to follow the drag easier than breaking from it.

This is all pure speculation on my part.
