Can anyone help. I have a 7 year old hen who has lost weight, has a spongy crop and runny muck. She looked like she was eating today but when I picked her up there was no feed in her crop, it just felt spongy?

Any ideas?

e coli infection broad antibiotic should do the job

but id be getting my birds tested

probiotic should help too

also check for rodents in around loft and where you keep your grub

It could be Candida/yeast infection, imo e-coli would hit more than one, whereas yeast can take its time to manifest leading to the odd here and there through time.

but as you say JAM...get birds tested

vey true i also find though that real high levels of canker/ yeast a lot of time is a secondary infection

and should be treated for canker anyway although this should be done after the treatment if a treatment is needed

a pic of the droppings i could make a educated guess but that all it would be a guess

also hearing a lot of ecoli infections in the last 2 months :emoticon-0138-thinking:

What have you decided to treat your hen with m8 .

She'll get Epsom salts to empty her crop then colloidal silver and elderberry juice and see how she gets on. I don't think there is any cancer as there is no smell from the mouth but I will give her a tab just to be on the safe side.

Thanks all for your interest and ideas, I will keep you posted on outcome.

Many thanks - Jim.

Paratyphoid or a heavy worm infestation ............... the only sure way to find out is to get the pigeon tested.

Remove it from the loft if you haven't already done so.

Yes she is and has raced well. I gave her the Epsom salts and massaged it around the inside of her crop. All that came out was cloudy liquid and GRASS! I did this twice then put her in a nest box with Homoform which she got stuck into, she's starving. She has silver and elderberry in her water and was gagging for a drink after eating. Will wait and watch.

probably some type of bacterial infection or protozoal infection.unless other birds are infected its difficult to tell.a crop flush test should tell you whats wrong.

She is looking like she is improving today. She is eating more and although her muck is still poor there is now white parts in it.

Many thanks to all who gave help.

She is looking good now and eating small seeds and Homoform but chucking the peas and maize away. What did the trick in the end was:

A mustard spoon of cinnamon

A mustard spoon of red lightening vitamins

Half a mustard spoon of graviola. Too much of this can drop blood pressure so I was gambling. I usually just use about a matchstick head size amount.

A tea spoon of slippery elm

This was all mixed together then turned into a jelly with collodal silver and a few drops of concentrated elderberry juice.

This was enough to fill a 5 mil syringe twice and all of it was put into her. The jelly is far to thick so the end was cut off the syringe.

The following day her muck had changed from brown water to brown jelly just like the mix I put into her but with white bits in it.

I gave her the same the next day.

The following day she had proper looking muck but still a wee bit wet.

Her muck is almost normal (but a wee bit wet) and its about five days since I gave her the mixture.

She's locked in her nest box with the cock sitting on a perch at the box door and she has started playing up to him so must be feeling much better.

I usually am very good at getting birds well but I did not think I would win with this one.

Thanks to all that offered advise.
