never easy trying older birds out that werent flown as youngsters .true they may not have gone far away , but because they still dont know the area ,are vulnerable .as for folk reporting them thats another issue altogether. :emoticon-0138-thinking:

about 5 years ago i tried to break in a older cock that had never been out

in his life , he was reported by a member of the public 2 days later 40 miles away

ive found that birds who have never been out before

when you give them their liberty they go up into the sky and just fly

never to be seen again,

could prob count on 1 hand the amount ive held onto out of dozens ive tried to break

birds that have flown out before at another location are easier to break

as they know the score with landing on the loft and going in through a trap

We had to break birds last year to start with it was hard but we started out with about 30 od to break we lost very little and what is left now after is very good birds now so I would always say that I can work if it is done right but agian it is harder as they get older but we had a 5 year old that we broke that scored 4th fed from 200+miles and has 3 club first so it can be done

i think its different if the birds have raced as from 77 to 82 i moved my lofts 5 times and all the birds broke no probs , one hen scored at every loft location untill she was 9 yrs old .

with older birds thats never flown out i just cut of the primary flights across one wing this stops the bird taking of and i let the bird walk in and out the loft door and bath with the rest of the birds , as the season progresses the bird moults the flights and to start with it flys up to lander then loft roof then flyes aound with the rest and is completly at home with the surrounding by the time its completly moulted out and is used to being let out and called into feed . with older birds its the intial shock of getting out and taking of before looking round ,

cut the flights job done :emoticon-0167-beer: :emoticon-0167-beer:

The harder they are to Break the better they they are.

On the contrary Andy, Good doos are Easy to break, dumplins that keep returning to their original loft haven't the brains to figure out the change.
