I have found that birds excercising for an hour or more at a time will pant on occasion. Not in any way through the excersion put in during the excercise.

Have seen it in cocks seperated from their mates. If the cocks go away ranging and return to the loft with strangers(some of which hens),on landing some will pant-excitement/stress??

these same birds will fly for an hour the following day and land with no signs at all of this panting. So it can happen without it being an illness and its not alway related to fear of attack in my opinion.

Have never seen the same behaviour in cocks settled and paired if they return from ranging with strangers.

Heat Lewis! Birds that are overweight heat up the muscles more to lift the body causing muscle burn just like if me and you had a race, 16stone me against 11stone you I would be panting like a blackpool donkey wae giant haystacks on its back!!!

Hot weather dehydrates cos of the HEAT built up internally!

I am not doubting that stress causes the gaping but there is something else along with the fear?JMO

Thank-you one and all for your added opinions however as Da12 asked "did I not see the birds being attacked"? On many occasions YES on others NO. You have to understand the loft location was 1000 ft above sea level so cloud level was on occasion only a hundred to 150 ft above, Perigrene would skim in and out of cloud making it extremely difficult to spot and for the birds to ascertain if danger was present.

On occasions when their was no cloud cover the perigrene was so high you would be very lucky to have your eye focused to its height and distance due to it being only a dot in your vision.

I personally have had to dismiss the heat theory due to birds racing on really warm summer days but never panting on arriving home nor do I believe its respitory, canker or any other ailment, however I respect your opinions and beliefs as this is what knowledge is all about.

Well not that high above sea level but do sit on the highest around my area--257meters -----------843feet so yes if it snows we get it first ,if its windy you get blown over so when the birds come home its climb all the way but must be guys on here in scotland to top this?

to get your hight above sea level--------open google earth --type in your address ---hover your mouse over your loft and read off hight at bottom of screen.
