Wiley Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Did you treat at all before pairing or sitting?
REDCHEQHEN Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Are they 'wet feeders' (it would be unusual for them all to be) I read somewhere about giving salt for wet feeders (just in a pot)

wings Posted January 20, 2012 Author Report Posted January 20, 2012 I treated for canker and worms thats all. I will try some salt, but is that not supposed to make them thirsty so making them drink more water? I will also feed in the boxes from now on.
blackdog Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 make sure you have plenty grits and minerals available to the birds, i would put some electrolytes in the water for a few days

lastdrop Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Birds are stressed feeding youngsters. This brings out all kinds of weaknesses. Ihope for your sake you don,t go through what I did. You must go through a process of elimination to get to the root of the problem. Did the watery droppings start about 8 to 10 days after hatching?
lastdrop Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Your young birds will not be developing properly. What have they been like the last two or three years, as you said that they have been like this a few years. I can easily inform you of my experiences with similar problem which means you won,t waste time looking in the wrong place for a quick fix.

alex young Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 This extract is taken from the Pantex Veterinary handbook.Wet Droppings (diarrhea)."After youngsters transfer from milk to solid grains, they may become affected by diarrhea. This, among other things, because the parents are consuming more water.Treat with electrolyte in order to avoid and treat this problem".Hope this helps.

wings Posted January 20, 2012 Author Report Posted January 20, 2012 Thanks everyone for all the advice I have loads to now think about.
lastdrop Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Everything these fanciers say is good advice but they are all shooting in the dark. Your symptoms are very similar to what my birds had. You have already stated that it has been around a couple of years or so. Let,s cut to the chase.- YOUR BIRDS ARE NOT WELL!!! FIRSTLY YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THAT TO YOURSELF. Now let,s look at the problem. You must go through a vet and go through a testing proceedure of elimination. The vet will discuss test results and probable cures. I went round the houses on this one with various government testing bodies who took it so far then were beat. I still had my problem! I killed all of my birds and totally freaked out with the experience. My loft lay empty for 3 months during which time i sprayed it every day after torching it inside. THINKING THE DISEASE WAS GONE FOR GOOD I bought some stock birds and paired them up and guess what---The disease was still there!! No kidding you but i was insane with rage! I searched and searched for help and found a vet Ian Parsons who took me through the same testing proceedure I had been through a dozen times but when he came up against that wall I had visited before he went an extra mile with further tests. The end result which you do not want to hear was a bit inconclusive but we had a plan. Probably HEXAMETIASUS. Treated as per a canker type disease but with limited success but after a discussion between us repeated treatment followed by a good bacteria dose. The disease may not be cured but it can be controlled like many others. If more fanciers were like you I think you may find this problem is more prevelent than it appears. If you want more help don,t hesitate to ask but I honestly think all you have to do is be honest with yourself and look at what is in your nest boxes

lastdrop Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 I had tested and tested with no answer. Every day cleaning out slurry from nest boxes. Despare sets in. I hope you never experience what I went through. The fancier asked for help. I am simply telling him of my experiences with what sounds like a similar problem. Believe me my actions were a last resort with what I saw in front of me. ANY culling was a last resort

ANY culling was a last resortCulled them all in the 90s with Salmonella, more nat tickets than i care to mention, but sometimes in a loft at breeding times the birds go right off and can be due to feeding differences and lack of condition rather than something sinister.A test should be carried out but many times this will be inconclusive! If a sinister disease was lurking such typhoid then signs should have been seen long before now especially during the moult? If the birds wer not checked in the moult then this must be something recent?

The fancier stated that this has been going on for a few years. That would suggest a deep rooted problem. only tests will resolve this problem. During my senario I got up at 2.00am to cull young birds in the nest of various ages ,to allow the bodies to cool before sending to Manchester University for testing. Such were the lengths I went to for a cure. As stated earlier this may be more common a problem than we think.
