geordie1234 Posted November 10, 2011 Report Posted November 10, 2011 For the less expierenced whats the easiest way to tell if a pigeon overweight?
greenlands Posted November 10, 2011 Report Posted November 10, 2011 Stand in the middle of the loft, hold the bird in your hands in front of you and let it drop , if it hits the floor with a thud it's well over weight,if it make's it to a perch but noisy while doing so it's heavy,if it makes it to a perch and you don't hear it flying there ,that will do for me. Dave barrie Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 if your not sure then its best to lighten the feed by adding barley or give just the barley for say a week,, at an ounce a bird a day,or just reduce what you are feeding to the ounce, after the moult its all they need and if they are getting out then they will not be fat, hope it helps davy.

tiger Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 easy handle your birds and you will know if they heavey then cut the feedin back accordingly, the birds will tell you if ur overfeeding learn two feed and you will be 95 % there

greenlands Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 I'm no champion mate, just like all theories,be it eyesign or whatever.Try before you buy.If it doesn't work for you then kick it into touch. You might be surprised.
Guest strapper Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 a bird should be light in the hand, but feeling bouncy ..a bird over weight will feel round in the keel area...and similar to what lindsay said..a bird should fly easy from the hand ..an overweight bird will look like its struggling to get to a perch.i go by ...if you think its over weight it most probably is.i would be feeding a light mixture now with barley included.

Guest geordiejen Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 a bird thats out regularly shouldnt be fat,im pretty sure a bird thats overweight will drop early from the kit out training around the loft.if you had 2 birds approximetely the same size one was fat the other was full of mustle the fat ones breast would feel more soft and spongey as a bird with muscle will be firm and strong.weighing wont tell you either as muscle is heavier than fat.
