All is certainly not lost when we have good people inventing whole new technologies - and making them "open source" - the way IBM did with the PC back in the '70's.

"You won't believe this guy from MIT and what he has invented. (among several).  I was amazed. I understand from the inventor's presentation the software will be open (freely available to all) and the hardware would be quite inexpensive to produce commercially.
