Recently, on most pigeon related sites a majority of posts are regarding BOP or mass young bird losses, expense of keeping/racing birds, although we can not ignore these issues, I ask myself, why do we persist and carry on year in year out with our birds. If I were a youngster, or someone considering joining this sport, I would have to be convinced that there are possitive experiences also.http://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0126-nerd.gif

So come on folks, lets hear some possitive reasons why we carry onhttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0137-clapping.gifhttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0137-clapping.gifhttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0137-clapping.gif

So come on folks, lets hear some possitive reasons why we carry on

Scraping the lofts out twice a day.

Buying expensive feeding.

Putting fuel in the car to go training.

Buying new stock only to find that they have escaped from the loft before you have any young birds from them.

:emoticon-0140-rofl: :emoticon-0140-rofl: :emoticon-0140-rofl: :emoticon-0140-rofl:

oh sorry just realised that you were looking for positive comments

Timming a good one in the SNFC races

winning club and fed races

Listening to stories of new fanciers to win for there first time from National races.

if you have had them so long and into it, what would you do without them, most hobbies etc , today have got problems, but most stick in, get over or sorted,

to be honest we are actually stupid and off our heads coz any other hobby ie running if you were getting eaten with lions,, at swimming you were getting eaten with sharks no idiot would take up the hobbie , i think there will bwe no good side to the hobbie soon , well if we let our birds out there wont be

think your bang on there , the biggest problem is 1 the unions are fragmented 5 unions in uk and Ireland , 2 no union has done anything positive for its membership regarding bop , i partly blame the way there set up with non fanciers , union means to come together to act as one , it's high time that we did just that, there are too many individual bodies and not one of them leading the way , all they do is take our fees and report birds and register rings and give distances out . But we need more , petitions have done sod all , I've never even heard on news once Racing pigeons have been mentioned in Parliament and the devastation bops are having on our past time , in the last 10 years things have changed drastically for the worse , my biggest fear is we all want something doing , we've tried the legal routes , but I think the politicians are deeply in the pockets of the R.S.P.B , i guess if what we have now resembles a third world without proper infrastructure then we have to start to rebuilding starting with one union for all , put those in power who want to act for the many not the few , invest in proper race plans , buy newer wagons create bigger federations / combines , national racing where clubs join rather than individuals , employ someone who's in the public eye as a naturist , send all our wagons down to parliament and bring London to a stand still , then perhaps we might have some credibility and get mentioned in parliament the bop protection law should have been lifted years ago as stated in the big house when they brought the protection out and rightly so after the misuse of DDT insecticides , now the protection needs lifting and investment in rebuilding habitats and planting broadleaf trees and recovering valuable wildlife habitat is needed , along with removal of urban bops and bops that are injured should be put to sleep as have no natural fear of man , rant over :emoticon-0179-headbang: :emoticon-0179-headbang: :emoticon-0179-headbang: :emoticon-0179-headbang:

I think we need tae stop tryin tae show RSPB as liars as we are gettin nae where wae that!

We need help frae unions and racing bodies who are sittin wae fat bank accounts while the sport spirrals tae oblivion!!!!

Direct action is required to make the people who matter sit up and take notice. Solicotors and publicists must be employed as well as direct action frae the fancier theiselves, either by brining tae public knowledge or, my fav, direct action against the killer!!!!

Had them most of my days.still get a buzz when birds return from 40 miles, or 400 miles. There is indeed a lot of probs however it is a great passtime. When i say passtime i really mean a way of life.

Much has been said by the doom and gloom merchants, about the BOP Problem bringing our sport to an end. They do indeed have a point, however the not to many young people in our sport dont want to here the d end is nie.for them they look forward to racing the birds many years after ther Father Grandfather have gone. This talk gets there back up.i agree with some good posts here.to many unions,to many nationals and not enough direction, from above.

I for one love me birds and will continue with them for many years to come.

Good luck to all this week

Cheers

well I've actually taken the time to address the new General manager of the R.P.R.A and asked him a few questions :) Message to Stewart Wardrop :

Firstly i would like to congratulate you on your new role as General Manager of the R.P.R.A . As a member of this union i would like to know what the union is currently doing to bring birds of prey ( bop ) to the attention of the government ???? what strategies are in place to over turn the protection of bop that was put in place and not over turned or reviewed since the making of this law , and is it not time that the unions came together to fight bop in parliament and perhaps instead of giving a big hand out to the charities after Blackpool wouldn't this money be better employing someone like Chris Packham to champion our cause before the sport can no longer continue . What happened to the confederation of unions ???? , wouldn't our sport be better run as a big business such as fifa do football and have more shared liberations from channel races , this sport really needs to look at it's infrastructure and get with the times were at least 50 years behind the continental fanciers , i look forward to your reply

For me, no other hobby has such breadth & depth of different interests within it. First and foremost there's the pigeons themselves - 4 months out of 12 they are your only interest - breeding, racing, showing come later on.

Sapper whats your positive comments?

i hivny been in the sport long enough to make say much positive bt there sure is the negatives lol

I enjoy sitting out in the garden and watching my birds exercising high in the sky, I enjoy preparing a team of birds for a race, and eagerly sitting at the loft awaiting their return.

Breeding your own team of racers is also a pleasant experience, especially, when they perform well at the racing.

Also, the friendships that are made and shared, I enjoy visiting fellow fanciers lofts, and regularly have friends visit me at my loft.

I also make a point of shaking the hand of the winner everytime, unlike somehttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0138-thinking.gif

I do enjoy my pigeons, and they keep me out of troublehttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

well done Mark, that's the right direction, we as individuals will get nowhere, and just give the RSPB more to down us with threats etc, i have just read my local paper, KIRKCALDY shopping cente high street, having problems with seagulls attacking people in the street actually takeing things from their hands etc while they are eating them, and whats being done about it, nothing, they have been told not to feed the seagulls, as they cant do anything, this is the environmental department, they have put up notices telling people not to feed them,as legally the local authority is not obliged to take any action as the gulls are a protected species, and even in these circumstances it is illegal to do anything that will cause suffering to the gulls, they are protected under the wildlife and countryside act 1981, so what is this country coming to, people are scared to go shopping and nothing can be done,
