hi all, wonder if any one could advise ? just been taking the ring numbers of all my birds before i pair up. and just noticed one young hen 2010 bred has swollen legs ? in fact i can only just turn her rings ? she is eating fine, flying fine and walking with no obvious discomfort ? no other lumps or swellings any where on her ? any clues ? thanks

she may have had a knock but to err on the side of caution i'd get her tested

Paratyphoid , swollen joints is a sign of paratyphoid , or the diet may be too high in protein , or has had a knock

Oldyellow how do come to the conclusion that the diet may be too high in protein? ive never heard that this could cause swollen joints? Can you tell us more about this?

Pigeon fed a high protein diet can cause too much toxins in the body which can cause gout , if the diet is lightened with wheat or barley it can remedy this :)

There was an article on here by C.S that covers maple peas and the shell unfortunately since the move over i cant find old posts in searches , the title of the thread was 'some further Nutritional Considerations in Pigeons'

^^Good article on gout in birds, however i wouldnt like to say what actually is the problem, could it be the hen has got to a certain age where some do and her legs have thickened requiring her ring to be cut?? There could be many answers however i wouldnt want to put my finger on it,

the W is close to the A on "keyboard " i am assuming LAME , are the hens seperate from the cocks ? i ask because i suspect some illness ,which has not affected the cocks ? and yes welcome :emoticon-0137-clapping:

I wouldn't chance anything get them tested , they may be a bit calcium deficient which can make there legs weak or may have a foreign object gone down there ring leg. Bit of live natural yoghurt along with some garden lime on there corn may resolve if calcium deficient :)
