Hi I am looking for long distance birds. Our club is froze for a year, I have joined another club which flies from France. In the past I have flown with middle distance and sprint birds. If I do not get any long distance birds could I use my birds? any suggestions Please.

what sort of distance have you been doing? and what are you moving up to ?.....even if you get new birds in it'll be 2-3 years ....probably got to go with what you've got in meantime :)

Every chance your Mid distance doos will win UP TO 500 mls if you feed them correctly, likewise your sprinters could win out to 300mls. Like Spin Cycle says, it'll take you years to get a group of distance doos together, Minimum of 4yrs i'd guess. That is with everything going to plan during that period.jmo.

If I read your post right, you intend to fly long distance from next year. You have a problem in that birds sent over 500 miles are usually 2 y-o and over, so you'd need at least 2 more years to first breed your first candidates, and then 'test' them.

The bird doesnt know if its a sprinter or Zola Budd!!!! Feeding, exercise and the motivation key JMO!

HELLO M8,in the club you have joined we have 3 races across the channel, top

one being about 380miles,the problem we found when we changed from North to

South road was our members dropped alot of good birds from the short as well as

the longest race,so I wouldnt worry about distance unless you are going to join

the National Clubs.hope to meet you at the next meeting :) all the best

can't agree....my admittley limited experience is that as the distance extends the pigeon needs to be different and is harder to find, certainly over 350

people say van reets etc can do 500 miles....and bred selectively over a number of years for this purpose they probably can...but whats the point? would you take a jan arden and breed/select its young for sprint?

People dont need to say that the van reet breed can score at 500 mile its fact! Ask STB on here!

You are correct that you would not be lookin tae win short races with yer Jan ardens or Kirkpatricks but thats been done aswell!

Might be better tae judge the doo on its merits rather than havin some pre concieved idea of their abilities????

i really only judge birds on the races they do....and perhaps more importantly when they hit the landing board...but your most likely a much better flyer than me so i must bow to your superior knowledge'

90% of my club races are 57-120....to me that is sprint...so the few birds i keep for this have to be good at this distance. my real interest is nrcc 250-500 so i want the bulk of my team to be good at this distance...having said that you ,IMO, want a mix something that'll make the most of a tail wind or something that'll grind home in racetime in a headwind....they all, however, need to be able to get home

i do find it strange how people get so 'protective' over strains....but if i've offended any svr owners i apologise.

Not at all offended??? Had many strains of doos most of them P***!!!! Wot i was tryin tae point out is that that strain doesnt always have a barrier to wot distance is percieved by the popular opinion!

The SVR has been generous to me from up to 500 mile but mostly use for upto 300mile. I have a channel team that are kirkpatrickXSVR mostly and score right out to 600+ with them. I also have won from Shap, 50 miles, with a Gilbertson pigeon bred for 600 mile stuff!!!!

If you look at the thread I asked for wot sprint breeds were thought! Never mentioned SVR!
