Roland Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 got to agree,we have very few world class athletes in the uk and andy is one of these. May seem that way on the face of it, but the reality is that we have world class performers - or very near the top in most sports beit team of individual. the world is in this regards a very big playing field, and we are in reality as good, if not better that most. Sure the Aussies may be better at swimming etc. Just destroyed the Aussie in winning back the Ashes. Plus we out class them in nigh 80% of any other fields or more.... Like Russia and the USA, BUT we are on many more field are classes above them. Like say from 1954 to 1984 the UK held the Mile record etc. - believe it believe it not - more times that the rest of the world put together. The square mile of London has produce many times more world boxing champions than any other etc. etc. the list is endless. Indeed I was just this last Saturday thought about putting up a thread of our sporting hero's. Remembering the ones that brought the lump to the throat, or down right tears. Look at 1976, world champions at Formula One, 500cc super bikes, - when it was the only REAL one, John Curry Ice skating ... these followed by other world champions... etc. etc. For Scotland just look at how our Lizzie McCloglan dominated that 10,000. How the Stewarts Ian / Peter / and Mary were world class... Ian in the Athens Final stepped aside and waved them on. How he and McCatherty destroyed the great Kip Kieno... I will put them up first with David Morecroft’s sensational 5000 metres world record sadly missing the 13-minute barrier by 200th of a second etc.
