kev01293 Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 up until a few years ago i hadnt had seen any bops around my loft or area and gotta admit i thought some fanciers were exagerating about the bop attacks but then my birds got their first visit from a sparrowhawk while they were in the garden/sitting on loft and they scattered in every direction in panic with one flying straight into my patio doors trying to escape,up, until that day i really didnt know how badly it affected our birds with some of mine taking a few days to return and when they did they were very nervous and it took a lot of time/patience to get some of them to land on loft and trap, some were flown out and some never returned at all since that day the sparrowhawk attacks have got more frequent meaning my birds have had to spend more time confined to the loft, does anyone know a fancier that hasnt ever had a bop attack? obviously as far as the rspb are concerned we are all panicking over nothing and our sparrows, finches etc are dissapearing cos of a shortage of hedges and woodland, suitable habitat etc so it wasnt the bops after all if its this bad now whats it gonna be like in 5 years kev
lanarkshire lad Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 lanarkshire lad the RSPB have reported there is only 1500+ pairs of peregrins in the uk , who are they think there kidding on. What we really need is to get one of the newspaper journalists on our side and high light the plight of the Pigeon Fanciers and the Demise of the song bird population due to Bop and as someone said before we as pigeon fanciers should join the RSPB and go to there meetings and kick up fuss from within the organisation. Will it happen???I think we pigeon fanciers need to get up aff our assses and do something more positive instead of putting a few stickers of hawks eating birds on the back of our car windows. What do you think the outcome would be if Pigeon Fanciers all over Britain joined the RSPB and went to there meetings and put forward our case??Do you Think it would do any good??By the way i dont even know if the RSPB have MEETINGS but its an IDEA.I would be the first at the door waiting to get in to any of there meetings if they have any.??Maybe someone better informed than me can tell us do the RSPB have regular meetings.
Guest Davy Fleming Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 The UK's farmland bird populations have fallen to a record low, official figures showed yesterday. The numbers of 19 species which rely on farmland for food and breeding have dropped by more than half since 1970.Grey partridges, turtle doves, starlings, tree sparrows, yellow wagtails, and corn buntings are among the hardest hit.The number of woodland birds has also fallen by by a quarter since 1970 said the Environment Department.Blackbirds, bullfinches and song thrushes declined with willow tits, tree pipits, spotted flycatcher sand lesser spotted woodpeckers down by more than 70per cent. The RSPB said the fall in some farmland birds was linked to decades of habitat change - which meant a lack of suitable nesting sites and a shortage of food. alex wight Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 As i,m not brilliant at wording letters, can some one write a letter to be put into our local papers? The plan would be to have all the ACTUAL facts in a letter, and on a specific date/day we all put the letter into the local and possibly national papers. This would hit the public more than just an odd letter here and there. We could keep doing this with a differently worded letter once per month and bring the true facts to the public, and not the bullsh it that the rspb keep lying about. Then we would hopefully see the best decline we could hope for............ the rspb membership. Only an idea, so if there is anyone out there that can put a small compact hard hitting letter together, please let us know, then we could put the plan in place. We need to try anything that can help us for the future. Regards alex.

Thats bad when that happens Dave, just goes ti show there is something wrong. There was wan on the rig last week, it sat on tap owe the leg just looking about it, then it flew of, we are sitting around 8 miles oot, it lifted and went the other direction.
kev01293 Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 going to rspb meetings and having our say would be a good idea ive been on google and they have plenty of local meetings and they charge an entrance fee depending on wether u are a member or not also the letter idea is good, all we need is a template letter drawn up and posted on basics so we could all write to our local papers and just keep on writing regulary to them with amended letters, the bop situation aint going away on its own so we need to protest and write letters but its getting fanciers to do it maybe we could put a sticky on basics with updates but could we get enough fanciers to do it in the first place what do u think?
