No really a novelty race as it's been going for umpteen years and they fly for more money in this race than your club probably flies for in a season. You pays your money and take yer chance. Nobody is forcing the issue. I've seen heatwave conditions in summer months when it has affected the birds at the opposite end of the scale.

Having followed this thread with conflicting views as I feel I sort of know these guys in a "basics" way I thought I would put in my twopence worth and hope I do not offend anyone. Bareing in mind I do not race pigeons, but I do love having my birds and keep them well to the best of my ability and knowledge. Being a part of this very usefull and amusing site means a lot to me. Bazz breeds and races a good bird and from the pic's I have seen his birds are tip top. I have seen pic's of STB's birds and to me they are the type of bird I would choose if I ever did get around to racing. As for his results, I do not know but it would appear from the comments he is well respected in the sport. Both of you in my mind are very fortunate in that you have a good knowledge of pigeon health and racing techniques. Bazz may be fortunate in his location and STB would appear to be in poor location given the race venues and weather patterns for this country. I feel it is up to the individual to decide if his birds are up to the task or not and I am quite sure that Bazz spends a lot of time deciding what to do. Yes at this time of year the cold and damp is not favourable but as someone previously said some summer days are just as bad. Saying that I know where STB is coming from and the welfare of the birds must be paramount. I think both you guys will have learned something from this thread as I sure have and that can only be a good thing. Hopefully there is no hard feelings between you's and Bazz gets a good race day for his birds if he sends. I would like to see the challenge take place between you's but it would have to be worked out fairly as to location etc. As HARRY HILL says " only one way to find out - FIGHT" HE! HE! HE! Seriously guys, all the best in the sport.

Like others have said, this race has been held for many years - I think I remember it back in the mid-sixties - and I think it is the same as any other 'extraordinary' event - e.g running a marathon, it needs aptitude & special training - tailored to that particular event.

Last year Blaz said he was careful in his choice of birds and the days he trained them, and I think this year will have been no different.

No hard feelings here at all and its not aimed at blaz , my comments are on racing birds in these conditions in general , i know we have had many years where the temp at christmas has been very mild , but its a bit different this year , dont know what the weather is like over in the east but here just now there is a lot of snow here from 3 weeks back and has not been above freezin. Today there is quite a breezy north east wind and although its showing -2 it feels like -15 with the chill factor . I just changed my drinkers just now and a film of ice was forming on them as soon as i put the water in . Also noticed with the wind today the birds hardly flew for 2 mins and were down aand keeping out of it , any other day even although its been a lot colder they have battered about all day but they hate that cold NE wind ,

anyway all the best for the race and hope the weather picks up a lot
