Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 What are you thoughts on second hand lofts in regards to problems they may bring, baring in mind that you would obviously disenfect and burn with blow torch.
Guest bakes Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 i havent got no probs with second hand lofts but wonce put up before birds go in would advise to vykill everythink floors walls boxs perchs and so on me personally even if i bought loft from close friend i would still vykill everywere just to make sure. all best.
Guest Tooshy Boy Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 BLOW TORCH THEN SPRAY WITH JAYES FLUID./
OLDYELLOW Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Jeyes fluid is brilliant stuff nowt wrong in buying anything second hand , although you will have to be prepaired to get scrubbing brush out and disinfect it all
Guest grizzler Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 would have to agree with the above posts.i certainly wouldnt put birds in a secondhand loft without giving it a good disinfecting first.
Tony C Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Yep a spray out with a Defra approaved disinfectant before any fixtures are put in. I would also replace the flooring or lay a new floor over the old.
greenlands Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Take your pick for disinfectants. http://disinfectants.defra.gov.uk/Default.aspx?Location=None&module=ApprovalsList_SI
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Would virkon s be ok, also i was intending to put 9mm ply over the top of the old floor....would this be ok as a break down:Disinfect with Verkon SBurn with blow torchPaint the inside of loftPut new 9mm floor down on top of old?Ben

You're normally told to clean then disinfect. Burn & disinfect are maybe different ways of doing the same thing, disinfecting? But if you consider burning to be cleaning, maybe best to do that first?
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 the loft has been cleaned inside, but i was told to burn to get rid of an little nasties in corners that may have been missed?

Roland Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Simpler, easier amd more practical to have seaoned second hand supplies of a demolishion site. JMO and from a few expierences.
alex young Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 A mate of mine bought one and washed it with a pressure jet before erecting, then he disinfected,it looks superb now and no problems health wise.
Tony C Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Whilst erecting the loft its a good idea to run a silicon mastic between the framework joins before bolting/screwing/nailing together.
