Ashamed referee Dougie McDonald insists: I won't quit despite lying to Celtic boss and SFA over penalty row

UNDER-FIRE ref Dougie McDonald last night insisted he will NOT resign despite admitting he lied to Neil Lennon and an SFA superior.

McDonald broke cover to plead for understanding but denied his integrity as a ref is compromised.

The official decided to come to RecordSport to plead his case after Steven Craven, who'd been one of his assistants in the controversial Celtic match at Tannadice two weeks ago, gave his version of events to the Sunday Mail.

McDonald, however, stressed he had been trying to support Craven by agreeing to concoct a story explaining why a penalty given to Celtic had been overturned.

The whistler, who is adamant he can still officiate Old Firm games and carry on as a top-flight ref, said: "It was of no benefit to me to come up with our stor y and I don't know why I agreed to it.

"I was being supportive of Stevie. It was wrong and I knew as I was leaving Tannadice that I shouldn't have done it.

"I also realised that I would have to tell the truth about what happened because I would be quizzed by the media.

"I had nothing to gain by going with the story but I thought i t might help Stevie."

With the game on a knife-edge at Tannadice McDonald had blown for a spot-kick when Gary Hooper went down in the box as United's keeper Dusan Pernis made contact but straight away the whistler knew he had got it wrong.

The ref, who spoke out last night after a shift as fourth official at Kilmarnock's 3-0 win at Tynecastle, said: "The keeper's legs made contact but then I saw the ball move in a direction which made it clear he had also got a touch on the ball first.

"It was a split-second decision and I put my hand up as the United players came rushing in as though to say, 'hold the bus, I know this is wrong'.

"I went over to Stevie and he said the keeper had touched the ball first. So I changed the decision and that was the right thing to do.

"After the match we were in our dressing-room and Stevie pulled out the wire on his communicat ion device before removing my earpiece.

"Then he asked 'what are we going to say to the supervisor?' "I just said 'I don't f****** care what we say to him. Just say that you called out Dougie! Dougie! and that I came over to you.

"The super visor (Jim McBurnie) came in, sat on the edge of the bath and asked what had happened.

"We told him and later when Neil Lennon came in we told him the same thing.

"It was wrong and I texted referees' chief Hugh Dallas as I left Tannadice asking him to call me.

"He had been at a meeting that day but he did call and I told him what we had said at the game. Hugh wasn't happy and he encouraged me to tell the truth."

McDonald then told Craven about his chat with their boss and added: "I don't think Stevie was too happy. He felt a dressingroom agreement had been breached.

"I got the impression he felt I was trying to claim the credit for rectifying my initial error. But I had nothing to gain from doing this. I just wanted to do the right thing."

McDonald knew he'd be given a 7.9 mark - the score given to a ref who makes a major error - by McBurnie because of his mistake.

But Craven was given 8.3 presumably because it was thought, wrongly of course, that he'd been responsible for making the correct call on the penalty incident.

Craven later resigned but McDonald refuses to follow him or accept any responsibility for hi s colleague's decision to quit.

And he also insists there is no reason why he can't take charge of Celtic matches or Old Firm games in the future.

He said: "Stevie was going to resign anyway.

"He'd already made that clear to some colleagues and maybe he saw this as a high-profile way out and a chance to make hay at the same time as well as have a go at Hugh.

"Stevie had never seen eye to eye with Hugh and the SFA. But I've always had a good relationship with Steve and I don't believe he was trying to harm me when he had his say.

"But he seems happy to take me down with him.

"However, I haven't even considered resigning.

"I have a 29-year record that was unblemished and although it was wrong to come up with a story and lie the key thing in all of this is that an error was rectified.

"The right thing was done on the pitch. That's why I've no doubts I can continue. I am one of the country's top referees and I am a strong character.

"I will apologise to Neil, tell him I'm sorry about the lie and I look forward to my next match at Celtic Park.

"I have always enjoyed work ing ther e and I wouldn't really understand if Celtic said they didn't want me to take charge of any more of their matches.

"This has to be kept in context. The correct decision was made and I couldn't live with myself if I didn't always try to get things right."

There is no room in sport for liars and cheats. How can his word or judgement ever be relied upon in the future, or how will fans react to dodgy decisions he is bound to make in future?, especially old firm games where violence results from bad refereeing decisions just now!! never mind on the back of this, mind you i'm interested to see if he is still in a job come Christmas. If he is? away fans should boycott matches until he is sacked. jmo

none of us have ever made a mistake or error in judgement eh? Could have been worse he could be corrupt through and through causing major problems within the sport.

Lets have a look a lennon, the way he constantly cries at the referee's. He done it as a player and is now continuing as a so called manager.

There were never these sort of problems in the olden days, so why now.

After all it is only a game.

all best.

correct, players lie and cheat the way through just about every game and nothing is said and yet a good referees career is deemed to be finished because he told a wee white lie even though it had no bearing on the outcome of a game.

it is only a game one mistake should never put an end to some bodies career, peoples careers would be over every day in my place of work that includes mine and thats jmo <_<

It was a pre meditated lie and he only stuck his hands up because Dallas made him do it, his job is no ordinary everyday job like ours, his depends on complete honesty at ALL times and he has been found wanting in that department.

I personally wouldn't go up the local park and watch ANY spl game cos its a poor league full of poor teams, it doesn't need poor refs to make it (and Scotland) look even worse. Sack him.

Posted

it isnt the fack it was a bad decision it was complete lies that were made up after it

Lennon moans a lot about refs and guess what he actually had a point its all came out now total disgrace sack him LYING c***

Posted

i think the biggest problem is that they are a law into them self and have somehow managed to have a

job where there are no one can get the sack a institution like, self appointed there taking all they can get from football, from primary Right through to professional, they have there fingers in all them pies

and no one knows what sort of money passes through there hands

Question Anyone have any Idea what pressure these guys are under ?????

Answer NO NO NO

The WHITE LIE never made any difference to the result.

Wasn't done with any bad intention.

The ref admitted he called it wrong so looked for a quick excuse to get out the situation without the hassle

but unluckily it backfired (UNFORTUNATELY)

SO EVERYONE COMES ON HERE AND REAL RADIO TONIGHT AND CAUSES MAYHEM SAYING HE LIED AND SHOULD BE SACK Think your jumping on the bandwagon guys as you don't have any idea what your on about for something so small

Lennon is the nut case here and making a song and dance as think he is the one that's causing the problem out of nothing

All this crap reminds of the 1995-96 season when the Late Tommy Burns had the conspiracy theories which like now is a load of bu-lshit.

Time for the SFA to come down hard on Celtic and Hooper as if i was a referee i would refuse to take charge of any of their games.
