Hi

Thanks for your reply, this is what i'm interested in seeing. The different side to the argument, they is plenty of research out there about Sparrowhawks from scientists like Ian Newton... However this only shows one side, i am hoping to be completely unbiased in my dissertation and provide the facts and different points of view. It seems there's not much about Sparrowhawks causing problems, like you are suggesting.

Thank you for your help.

BETH

you will never get to the truth about the killers of the skies

the rspb will lie through their teeth about what damage the

bop.s do, but as someone said earlier it will all come out when

it is to late to do anything about it.[same as the ozone layer]

there will only be birds of prey left, and at the rate they are going

it wont be to long.good luck with your studies.

Well tequilaskylark, lets look at this from another angle, you're obviously not numb and have a reasonable education .You join a pigeon forum and studying BOP you must have gained the knowledge to realise that pigeons are the main diet for various BOP in this Country.A little foresight would have told you not to push the wrong button when asking for help.

Look at it another way.I'm now asking the question and it's directed at you.

A large BOP has just taken your dog tequilaskylark by the throat and is now proceeding to rip it appart in front of you.

What's your reaction to that ?

Now you might have an insight to what pigeon fancier have to put up with.

Sparrow Hawks, Peregrines and the like have been protected by fools who only have one goal in life ,that's to desimate small birds and blame there demisal on everything except themselves ,the RSPB.

I live in the wilds of Cumbria, the fields directly behind my pigeon loft once nested SKYLARKS and hundreds of other small birds ,finches etc.The only birds you see now are jacks, crows, magies and seagulls, that might answer you question.

Lindsay C.

PS. there's only one place for sparrow hawks and that's no where near my pigeon loft.

bluemorning, I have to admire your optimism and your ideas on how to reduce the threats from Spars. I think I may have a better idea, at least it suits me. If and when I find that I am the target for a Spar, I will remove the Spar. I have made up my mind that I am entitled to keep and race my pigeons. Regardless of the RSPB propergander about flying rats, I am fully entitled to carry on caring for my birds, and as such I will do what I have to do to protect them. I simply will not sit back and complain or look for easy solutions, I will just get rid of the menace. While I am about it, if the menace decides to attack the numerous small birds, doves or wood pigeons that my wife and I have encouraged to frequent out garden, I will deal with that in the same way. Why should a minority of mugs dictate to the rest of us how we should live. We have lost the skylarks and many other species to the Falcon because the mugs have decided that they would prefer the Falcon to species such as the lapwing, red grouse and the woodcock. The mugs say that it is down to farming methods, which is a downright and deliberate lie. Farming methods on the mountains of Wales have not changed a jot for time immemorial but nevertheless the mugs can convince the ignorant that they are right. More recently, we are now pestered by the ever growing numbers of Gos that were introduced by the mugs. They are now targeting, not only pigeons, but also domestic livestock. In my opinion, I think we really have to fight back because, to me, enough is enough. For those who read this, and who may think that it is risky to write the sort of thing that I have written here, it is worth remembering that the British Court system still requires evidence in order to charge someone with an offence.

i fully understand your feelings mate, but i try and stay on the right side of the law these days.and the things i post are to try and help people its not a cure all, but if it helps lets try it.but if a spar kills at or around your loft it will be back, its to try and break the chain. bop will take the easy option every time.pot owls tape recordings etc waste of time. put a pot falcon on top of your loft in two weeks your birds will be sat on it.i love all birds. been in my life for 40 years including flying harris hawks, but while out of the sport if i found a flown down racer it was coming home with me to be fed a watered.always had a love of racing pigeons.

This post has been copied to another thread and used as an example for others to follow. That thread has been locked pending removal to moderators board for Admin attention.

A point worth remembering for future is that the very act of posting encouragement to break the law is that you may at the same time be providing the evidence required to prosecute you.

Hi

Thank you for your reply. Its really helpful.

Sorry it seems my post hasn't gone done too well. Im sorry about that, i didn't mean to course any upset or suspician. I am a student, just researching Sparrowhawks. I do not at the moment have enough information to make an informed decision on their 'methods' I hope to include both sides of the arguement of Sparrowhawks hunting, in my dissertation, and it seems you all have very strong views on them and their hunting habits. Please i am a genuine student, just trying to get as many responses to my questionnaire as possible. i have had doubts on one of the other forums i joined too, but they asked me some questions and it seems were happy with my answers. The reasons i joined all those forums is to simply get as many people to fill out my questionnaire as i possibly can.

I am really sorry to cause such problems, however i really hope you can see that i am genuine and will help me out.

Many thanks

Beth

Hi Beth, just as well you arent studying English as your spelling is a bit dodgy ???? Not usual for a student, I would say ??

Hi

Thanks again to everyone for your help and useful information. It is much appreciated!

I was wondering, for those kind enough to attach photos, would you mind if i used one or two too show the disastrous effects Sparrowhawks have had on your pigeons?

I have recently been reading Tooth and Claw by Peter Cairns & Mark Hamblin, there is a chapter in the book about Pigeons and raptors. Very interesting, especially to hear the points of view from members of the NEHU and RPRA. Definitely worth a read! It must be nice for pigeon fanciers to see their side of the argument aired!

As for my spelling, i do my best, but i have to say texting on the phone probably doesn't help. Also i kind of rely, on spell check flagging up any mistakes. So if there are mistakes, i blame the P.C :-)

My dissertation is coming on well now and i have 2000 words, i ended up with 109 completed questionnaires. My goal was 100, so thats fantastic!

Many thanks again, i really do appreciate all of your help.
