I have a second bird in this weekend. It is a really beautiful bird, but carrying its leg...though it can fly ok, currently resting in dog cage with food and water. Owner traced and spoken to but does not want it couriered home on account of cost. I know nothing about racing pigeons. Can anyone tell me, are all injured birds killed?

the guy has a duty to collect the bird but with courier cost maybe costing 40 pounds he may not have the money. where do you live ?maybe someone close by could care for it till its fit and well to make its way home

Thats a disgrace, the owner has a duty to sort that out, We rely on the public for their help and you've been let down there, I'm sure we can help on this site

The chap is in Morpeth, northumberland. I am happy to feed it and water it in the meantime but I would like it to go because I have a couple of terriers who are anxious to make its acquaintance! As I said, I barely know one end of a pigeon from another but would say it is a gorgeous bird... are bird with injured legs destroyed...can anyone tell me please?

I have the ring numbers and have spoken to the chap who sounds fairly elderly, it was liberated in France yesterday apparantly. I would pay the cost to get it to him myself but it seems fairly pointless if it will just be necked when it gets home. Also, it is too lovely to be necked...I'd develop an immediate interest in pigeons were it not for the dogs!

I am pleased to hear that legs sometimes heal. If the owner does not want it, I worry that if I paid for it to go home, he might just kill it. I would rather release it on the farm next to mine where there is a nice flock ...perhaps it would either live there or make its own way home in due course.

Mmm..

Steady, I can sense you're getting into these pigeons :):D

Yes, Frank, you have no idea! We have had a fair few rest here but until this weekend I have always been a bit frightened to handle birds (too flappy really!). But one came in yesterday and I managed to get it without fainting,...and I sent it on its way thismorning, much perkier. Cannot trace its owner yet, was a BELG 2009 bird. Then, about 6 hours later this beauty arrived! I thought, oh well, I have to helpthis one, its got a gammy leg!

I think I will go check for swelling and try the straw idea :D

How do l I contact Old Yellow?

http://forum.pigeonbasics.org/user/2598-oldyellow/

this is Oldyellow's profile - hopefully the photo won't frighten you :P (keeps the kids away from the fire lol!!)

I don't think it's that easy for guests to contact members as I don't think you can send personal messages - but I'll send Oldyellow a link to this thread to have a look at.

And incidentally - one of my birds has just got back from France having broken his leg 2 months ago - he was only out of action 4 weeks - racing pigeons don't race with their legs  they only need them to land with when they reach home !

Good man, probably looking after a few of our lost birds :)

I would imagine the BELGE rung bird was also flying from France and is probably owned by someone in the UK

If it lands in my garden I'll let you know it didn't get very far LOL !

I'm in Redcar

If Oldyellow can't help out - we will be training our young birds from Malton (weather permitting) later in the week

Whats the name of your nearest public house :)
