fiferman1 Posted June 20, 2010 Report Posted June 20, 2010 hi folksim a complete beginer hoping to start a small racing pigeon loft from scratch.im in no imediate hurry to race as i would like to rear my 1st birds myself and breed my own racing team from scratchi would like to start with the minimum amount of birds and slowly and selectivly build up over the years and even then i would like to keep things on as small a scale as poss.as i said before i am a complete and utter newbie at this apart from a pet pigeon we had when i was about 10 yeas old lol, hard to believe just how tame he was, landing on us and feeding from our hands and the fact he flew free and always returned amazed me at the time and even now 25 years on homing pigeons amaze me.until now iv never had the opertunity to keep some but at last im in a position to have a go. i would really like to start from the very begining as its as much about the rearing and breeding my own birds as it is the racing. could anyone tell me what clubs or organisations i would have to join in order to breed and take part in races? how many birds to get to raise for breeding?just how small scale i could be and still take part in racing?minimum loft size and how many pens required to keep and breed a small team? any help and aadvice would be very much appreciated and i will no doubt be picking your brains for many years to come

fiferman1 Posted June 22, 2010 Author Report Posted June 22, 2010 cheers sapper,so do i just join the fife federation and no need to join a national federation?do i join before getting my first birds or once i have them?its all new to me sorry.
JohnQuinn Posted June 22, 2010 Report Posted June 22, 2010 You don't have to join a club until you are ready to race. When you do join, the club will take your fees for the Fed, and the SHU at the time you join, sort yourself out with some GOOD birds to get started, then when you have a team of young birds, join your local club, everything starts with them.As others have said, don't be shy asking for advice or tips, plenty good fanciers on this site will help you out. All the best.
showman Posted June 22, 2010 Report Posted June 22, 2010 minimum loft size and how many pens required to keep and breed a small team? What sort of room do you have available for your new loft ?
Guest spin cycle Posted June 22, 2010 Report Posted June 22, 2010 thats exactly what i said when i started 'just a small team' ....it depends how much space you've got. you could have say a 10x6 and fly everything to it 6 pairs of ob and 10 ybs perhaps. or a couple or 6x4 sheds 1 ob,1 yb.remember you'll need somewhere for baskets/feed . work out what sort of loft/ size you want to have/start with and work from there. its great fun starting up...best of luck
sapper756 Posted June 22, 2010 Report Posted June 22, 2010 cheers sapper,so do i just join the fife federation and no need to join a national federation?do i join before getting my first birds or once i have them?its all new to me sorry. As stated already, your priority should be to get a loft and some stock birds, then breed your own team of youngsters to race, then look to your local club which I believe is Lochgelly, their secretary is on this site as catelae lofts, he will help you I am sure. Do you have any birds yet?

If things do well, you could have another loft in the future, say, 8x6 for your youngsters, and have your bigger loft just for your old birds.
