How far a race would you push yer latbreds too,

I race mine to the yearling Derby in the Fed, 250mls, as a rule anyway, I got 3 out of Sunday's difficult race, 267mls this year, all on Sunday. I breed a dozen or so every year, always have done, This year i started with 11, lost 4 right away training, which is pretty normal to be honest, of the 7 who made the first race i have 5 in the loft, 2 of which missed Sunday's race. One is getting a reprieve as its paired to a 2yr old hen thats going to Ypres, but it had 5 races to 225mls, the other will go this week , 313mls, from the 3 i got on Sunday and the hen going this week i'm confident that with a full moult and some luck in racing i'll have 1 or 2 good pigeons next year. Thats a better average than Budgie's 2% rule ;)

The best pigeon i've had in the last 10 years was a latebred. He went to Maidstone 361mls, still carrying 4 nest flights! He won £388 that day and went on to score another 3 times from Maidstone as well as Lille, where he won a Photo of himself, and Falaise.

Lot to be said for latebreds in my hut.

Should also point out that they get treated exactly the same as the rest of my yearlings, except USUALLY i stop them at the 250ish mark, where the others will carry on to the coast and occasionally over the water.

HI CEM.i am an avid beleiver in my late breds,as racing on the system i use i never have many old birds left at the end of the racing season,so my late breds are taken from the racers that are left!,simple really,you can,t breed late breds from the birds that you loose in the early races!.so,on the theory that only the best are left,or it might be the lucky ones.rightly or wrongly that has always been my system,and over the years,it has worked reasonably for me cheers yir wee pal fae NEWMAINS

in the past i have had some excellent old birds from being latebreds, i have found that a few training tosses in the year of their birth, makes a big difference to them,,, as yearlings sent them only when the weather was suitable up to approx 200 mile+, , then as two year old, mature birds, found them very, very good , i find fanciers not having much time for latebreds, but in my experience , by going easy with them,and being patient, they can make excellent, fresh mature, winning pigeons,

Had a few 08 latebreds coming well this year so far.They'd never been in a race basket until the first race of the season.

Last year i just took them anywhere-if i was going a run in the car they came with me,singled them up from around 50 miles a few times as well.

I've never been to keen on them to race but after this year i think i might breed a few each year.

Generally speaking they'd be off your best birds and bred when the weather is warmer. So you can see how they could turn out to be handy if you find a way to manage them.

MY SYSTEM IS!my late breds never go in a basket in the year of their birth,as long as they are healthy they are alltreated the same as any other bird in the loft.one very important thing to me is,they are all vaccinated the year of their birth.example!.any late breds bred this year will be treated as above.next year they will just start as part of my race team,no special training,in at the deep end from the start,and if theyare healthy and good enough,they are kept going,i normaly stop themafter the last inland race 360mls,if that doesn,t stop them for me!.so there you go aaron 21,you asked for my system with late breds,VERY SEVERE I KNOW,BUT IF YOU GET EVEN ONE PER YEAR,THE YOUV,E WON A WATCH!SEVERE BUT TRUE!CHEERS BILLY K.

have always taken between 10 and 18 l/breds and have had more than a bit of success with them,trained year of birth and raced to 240-280 mls as yearlings.have 7 flown 200mls- 240 mls and 1 flown 282 mls so 8 left for next year for the national team. :) :)

i think most fanciers take 2 or 3 and these are then forgotten about,we take enough to fill a basket and this makes it worthwhile for training etc. ;)

WHOT DO YOU CLASS AS LATE BREEDS CEM ,

i gifted a pair to a lad up north 2 year ago around october time

he raced them as normal yearlings last year he

dropped 1 about the 4th race the other flew his program

out to about 500 miles

 

it being his first bird out of leicester around 380 miles

I bred 45 latebreds in 2007, i sold the 20 hens and kept the 25 cocks, trained them to 50 miles as babies all over the place and now i have only 3 left but 2 of them are my best racers, so was it worth it????? Not really sure but i guess a small yes.
