OVERCROUDING COULD BE ONE AND WE ALL BREED FAR TOO MANY, ALSO MASS TRAINING, WHICH IS OK AFTER BIRDS HAVE BEEN SCHOOLED ON THERE OWN, BUT IF U HAVE A LARGE TEAM HOW MANY ARE FOLLOWING THE CROWD, BETTER TRAINING IN SMALL BATCHES,

breeding yb s with less constitution, due to modern day treatments, treating willy nilly, for the least thing, were gradually ruining the constitution of the ybs, then breeding from them and making matters worse, off course there are many other obstacles, but in my opinion this is the main one

exellant post will be very interested to see the answers

Got me worried tons of people round mine seeing to be dropping tons of birds. I'm only breeding 20 - 30 next year so hope I don't loose many. I can imagine it will be a bit demoralising loosing the lot!

THE SMALLER THE BETTER, SINGLE TOSSING IS NOT EASY BUT IF DONE U KNOW THE BIRD IS DOING IT ON ITS OWN, I WOULD SAY BETWEEN 15 TO TWENTY, I HAVE HEARD FANCIERS TOSSING THEIR BIRDS TOGETHER FROM 30 MLS, AND ALL COMING HOME, THEN ONE OF THOSE BIRDS GETTING TOSSED ON ITS OWN FROM 5 - 6MLS AND NOT BEING ABLE TO GET HOME, A LOT OF FANCIERS TRAIN WITH TRAINERS NOW TAKING 2-3 HUNDRED BIRDS WHICH ARE ALL HOMING TO THE SAME AREA SO WHAT ARE THE LEARNIG APART FROM LEARNING TO BREAK, WHEN SCHOOLING YOUNG BIRDS U ARE LERNING THEM TO FIND A LINE OF FLIGHT ON THEIR OWN. THEY NEED THE SCHOOLING BEFORE GOING ON TRANSPORTERS FOR TRAINING.

when i first started flying  i used to toss 10 at a time from same site , never seem to lose many  , proberly 3 outta 30 ybs over total training from 5 - 60 ml , so still do same and only 2 down so far this year .

not lost many, as taking it easy, especially on first race & training, why rush the youngsters? as (in my opinion) & listening to well experienced flyers, there is too many breeding too many birds & crossing there fingers. a few in our club sent 11 birds & more, & have more than half missing? there is time for 2nd 3rd & 4th races & this is even before they are mature birds, 2 yrs, 3yrs etc.

only my opinion.

thanks

Am training 33 babies and going well, ( never had as many ) I think breeding from every pigeon, just to make the numbers up.  MUST breed only from your best and proven/consistent  pigeons.

Some fanciers I know, make a diary of the position the youngsters (and old birds) arrive at the loft during racing.  At the end of the season, if they've not arrived home in the first THREE throughout the season, thay are not kept.  May only have a few birds at the end of it all but you've got your best.  Perhaps ETS could be very handy here in your calculations.

The reasen so many ybs are lost is we now breed at christmas and January and come July they placed in a basket, yet they have developed without having there homing instinct stimulated! Its to late and add to this the number of pigeons in the air and the heat and are asking for trouble.

YBs need to trained at 12 weeks old, its when they are most able to learn and it develops there homing ability at a early age. To many people leave it till 2 weeks before the first race and come a cropper!!

stuart, i"m the same as clockman,i re-started in may with young birds, given by friends,so my youngsters are the age you suggest for them to be trained,

like clockman i experienced a bad toss yesterday from about 25 miles only.

i only have 24 yound birds & up to darkness last night i had 12 coming in ones & two"s.

luckily this morning i have had another 6.

i think the present heavy losses being encountered are more to do with the atmospherics that exist during this very hot & humid spell of weather.

Had a sticky toss yesterday as well 13 from 19 on the shift from 40mls another 2 this morning. Mibe been summat i the air yesterday

SWILCOX HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT THE BIRDS DO NOT DEVELOPE HOMING INSTINCT  AS WHEN YOU HAVE THEM GOING OUT AND YOU DO NOT SEE THEM FOR OVER 1 HOUR ARE THEY NOT LEARNING IT THEN YOU SHOULD NOT TRAN THEM TILL THE ARE ROMING AND I WOULD NOT TRAN DARKEND YOUNG BIRDS TILL THEY ARE OFF IT AS THIS WOULD BE TO MUCH STRESS FOR THEM

Had a 25 miler this morning, let go at 8:00, tucked up at 8:35.  This heat will kill em' if you're midday training.  I think ( if you can ) you should either train them early morning or 6pm---ish.  It's certainly suiting mine at the minute.

Hello Wings

I agree that roaming is an excellent way for pigeons to stimulate there homing ability and yb teams that roam for over an hour seldom experience big losses!!!

To the other lads what i was also trying say was if you train early you miss all the conjestion. I must have seen 50+ batches in the air yesterday all mixing up and going off line. I think there just all getting mixed and when they tire the hawk blasts into them and scatters them everywhere!

imy self have been training early morning or late afternoon they are coming great but do you think i should be worried about the fact that when they have their first race they will have to fly in the heat of the day, which my ybs arent use to.

yesterday was'nt as hot as today is, i'v only been racing 32 years now so still got alot to learn, how about you billy mac?

I,M SURPRISED NOBODY AS MENTIONED VACCINATION AS BEING THE PROBLEM FOR SO MANY LOSSES,A LOT OF FANCIERS I HAVE SPOKEN TO SAY THAT IT CANT BE DOING THEM ANY GOOD,BUT THEN IS IT JUST ANOTHER EXCUSE.
