Note that you are looking for a new transporter. Scottish North West Fed went down that road last year and I thought it might save you from re-inventing the wheel if you talked first to our President Scott Gibson, who was basically the driving force behind the NW project, and it was in service for the 1st race in 2006 ... not bad from an AGM go-ahead in 2005.

Our members also viewed Almond Valley Fed's 'second hand' Geraldy, and the job F Jamieson/ D Blain? made of putting it all together on a rigid chassis, plus making the aluminium crates for it; and viewed Central Fed's transporter, another rigid chassis, from the same people.

But we didn't have the £75000? for a geraldy, and decided to build our own. Or rather a committee chose a second hand rigid motor and had a 2500 bird tranporter body put on it ... all for around £35000. We also applied for and won a grant for new baskets, plastic, built by the same company that built the English National Flying Club's baskets. For around £10000.

If you visit that club's website at  http://www.nationalflyingclub.co.uk

you'll see what they got ... more modern and scientifically state of the art than Geraldy, as it was built in conjunction with a UK University's animal welfare department; and its also a hire job, rather than outright ownership, so easier on funding.

So get the best you can for your money ... you'll only get one crack at it, once its spent its er ... gone.

Hi Bruno,

Very interesting,

Was your 2500bird transporter built on 7.5 GVW chassis and what length ?

The 35k include baskets    or 35k plus 10k grant  ?

I viewed the NFC baskets/alum crates at blackpool was not that impressed as to

there rigidity

You say plastic baskets all plastic ?  PVC welded or bolted together?

Thanks

Don't have all the info you seek, Scott Gibson has.  ;)

The chassis is double cab, weight & length are maximum allowed within 'ordinary' Driving License, i.e. LGV/HGV license is not required.

£35K for transporter only; £10K for baskets. Incidently £75K for geraldy is for transporter only, for baskets add another £25K.

We had prototypes built for 2 alum crates and 1 all-plastic crate (bolted). All featured water / food hoppers on 3 sides [one outside, two inside] and a removable grid, designed to keep the birds seperate from the droppings.

Fed Delegates decided on all-plastic on cost & weight: £100 vs £200 per basket and a gross weight saving of 1/2 ton on the transporter.  We had expected to have them for 2006 YB races but didn't due to design & production problems.. haven't had a recent update on that one.

Hi Bruno

With Reference to your comment on the Geraldy Transporter costing £75,000 without baskets / crates to the best of my knowledge for a brand new rigid boddied Transporter BMW or MERC that holds 4,000 birds with baskets cost 100,000 euros approx = 70,000 to 75,000 pounds.

LANARKSHIRE FEDERATION HAS JUST OVER £68,000 IN THE BANK AND IF THEY WANT A NEW TRANSPORTER ALL THE MEMBERS WILL HAVE TO DIG DEEP AND WITH A LOT OF MEMBERS BEING ON THE OLDER SIDE I THINK THEY WILL BE RELUCTANT TO PUT THEIR HAND IN THEIR POCKET TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THEY WONT GET USE OF FOR MANY YEARS I DON'T THINK WE WILL HAVE A NEW TRANSPORTER NEXY YEAR AND I WOULD LIKE TO CORRECT A MISTAKE I MADE WHEN I SAID OUR BIGGEST BIRDAGE THIS YEAR WAS JUST UNDER 8,500 WHEN IN ACTUAL FACT IT WAS 8,800 WHICH I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN AS I HAD ALL THE FIGURES ON THE COMPUTER SORRY I WAS 300 OUT I WILL GIVE MYSELF SIX OF THE BELT BUT I STILL THINK AFTER THIS YEAR WHEN EVEN MORE MEMBERS LEAVE IT WILL BE HARD TO GET A BIRDAGE OF 10,000 AGAIN AND I HAVE SENT E-MAILS TO FIND OUT THE ACTUAL PRICE OF A TRANSPORTER TO ACCOMADATE 10,000 BIRDS PLUS ALL THE NECESSARY ITEMS NEEDED AND WHEN I GET THE CORRECR PRICE I WILL PUT IT ON THERE IS NO POINT IN GUESSING THE PRICE

I DON'T HAVE A QUOTE YET BUT I THINK GARETH HAS ONE AND I HAVENT YET SPOKE TO HIM ABOUT IT BUT AS I SAID IN AN EARLIER POST THE COST INVOLVED WILL PROHIBIT LANARKSHIRE FROM BUYING A NEW TRANSPORTER AT THIS TIME , BUT THAT DOES NOT CHANGE THE WAY I FEEL I WANT A BETTER TRANSPORTER AND I THINK EVERYMAN THAT COMES ON HERE FROM LANARKSHIRE WOULD WANT A BETTER TRANSPORTER, EVEN YOU HOMER49, BUT AS I SAID IT WONT HAPPEN AT THIS TIME BECAUSE EVEN ,AND I MEAN EVEN, IF IT DID COME ABOUT WE MANAGED TO GET NEW TRANSPORTERS THE COST TO STORE THEM SAFELY ALL YEAR WOULD COST A FORTUNE UNLESS SOMEBODY IN THE FED IS GOING TO STORE THEM FOR NOTHING, WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE UP KEEP AND OF THEM AND THE MAINTENANCE OF THEM AND ANY REPAIR WORK NEEDED THIS WOULD NOT COME CHEAP BUT AS I SAID EVERYMAN FLYING IN LANARKSHIRE MUST WANT A BETTER TRANSPORTER BUT WE WILL HAVE TO BE REALISTIC ABOUT THIS,MAYBE SOMEBODY CAN TELL ME WHERE ALL THE MONEY WILL COME FROM BECAUSE I CAN'T SEE WHERE. AND IF THERE WAS A MOTION PUT UP AT THE AGM TO SAY FOR EXAMPLE THAT A LEVY WOULD BE PUT ON EACH MEMBER OF SAY £100 AND TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE MEMBERSHIP WILL DROP BY MAYBE 50 MEMBERS TO LEAVE 500 PAYING £100 EQUALS £50,000 AND THEN TAKING ALL THE MONEY FROM THE FED , WHICH YOU CANNOT DO BECAUSE IT NEEDS MONEY JUST TO FUNCTION THERE WOULD STILL NOT BE ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY TRANSPORTERS AND GOING BACK TO WHAT I SAID ABOUT A MOTION BEING PUT UP AT THE AGM TO IMPOSE A LEVY OF £100 PER MEMBER THIS WOULD NEVER GET PASSED IN A MILLION YEARS BECAUSE THERE ARE FAR TOO MANY MEMBERS WHO COULD NOT AFFORD TO PAY THAT BECAUSE THERE IS ONE CLUB I KNOW OF ALLREADY THAT HAS ASKED FOR THE BIRDAGE TO BE DROPPED THIS YEAR BECAUSE IT'S ELDERLY MEMBERS ARE FINDING IT HARD TO PAY THE 25 PENCE AND A LOT MORE WOULD CERTAINLY LEAVE IF SUCH A LEVY WAS IMPOSED THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION BUT OTHER MEN WILL HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS BUT YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THIS FROM A REALISTIC POINT.

I LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING OTHER OPINIONS

UNLESS I CANNAE READ THE QUOTE THAT GARETH HAS SENT ME  IT WORKS OUT AT 223 ,000 EUROS FOR TWO UNITS AND EVERYTHINGTO GO WITH THEM PLUS A TRAILER TO TAKE 2,000 MORE AND I DON'T KNOW THE CORRECT LENGTH A TRAILER SHOULD BE IN THE UK I THINK IT IS 40 FEET AND HOW WOULD THIS GO WITH AN ADDITIONAL TRAILER HOOKED ON, WOULD THIS TAKE IT OVER A LEGAL LIMIT OR DOES THAT COUNT SEPERATE BUT THE ABOVE PRICE IS FOR SECONDHAND UNITS AND STILL NEED TO ADD ON VAT QUITE A TIDY SUM. I KNOW SOME CLEVER PERSON WILL CONVERT THE EUROS TO POUNDS AND THEN ADD ON THE VAT FOR ME AND THEN PUT UP THE PRICE [i HOPE]
