JohnS Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 just a post wondering how far each members longest young bird race is each year? my federations is 148 miles which is Ripon. This is on the back of two 60 miles, two 76 miles and one about roughly 110 miles. If i want to compete in th young bird national i have to jump my pigeon 100 miles into different racing conditions(drag of pigeons all over). this is my opinion is not giving pigeons a chance in the national.people will say go to meeting but these meetings are held back by people scared to lose their pigeons. whats peoples thoughts and opinions on young bird racing and distances?
friendsloft Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 I will send my youngsters to the coast which is 200miles from me friendsloft
Guest Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 our longest race in the welsh north road fed is lillers in france which is 254 mls to me....paul
Guest Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 I aggree its been happening for a no of years now i can go along with the argument about schooling y/birds and iam not against the short distance men but what about the people who want to race nationals so give us a race about 180mls a week/10 days before the y/bird nat and iam fed up wintering a load of birds that cant make 200mls as yearlings i know it looks good for the birdage but i think its false economy in the end let the basket be the pedagree
Pompey Mick Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 When I flew north the furthest Young Bird race was approx 200 Mls+ and on the South the furthest we go is about 150 mls or 180 mls West. It seems Federations today look to economic racing and leave the longer races to the Classics/Nationals. I can see no problem in jumping young birds as long as they have had a series of races under their belt The distance that you race in the Club has no bearing on preparing pigeons for the Nationals drag-wise, whatever distance you fly the birds are still homing to a compact area. Your best national candidate could be the YB that comes home on his own ,well after the batch, and has obviously 'had a go'.
JohnS Posted February 1, 2007 Author Report Posted February 1, 2007 i agree with the false economy thing. yes and giving us a 180 ml race before national undoubtedly helps them compete a bit better. theres no need for 4 races under 100 mile! if we scrapped a kelso and had a wakefield at end it would be better.IN MY OPINION. people are always going on about no young blood in our sport just imagine someone racing youngsters/keeping them all winter then then dropping like flys when they hit a bit of distance and head wind. im fully aware distance is why we lose as many pigeons but racing them from short distances isnt what racing is about. meetings are also full of people who dont complete the fed programme.
Guest bristolkev Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 our longest young race has been from berwick 302miles for me.but this year they are hoping to push onto edinburgh.this is the south west of england lerwick club.

pigeonscout Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 I have a couple 250 mile + 2 x 200 and a 300 channel. and i would not be one of the longer flyers there are guys fly 50 mile more than me.

Guest WINGS 04 Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 can i ask people what there shortest and longest races r? oyr shortest is about 60, but we dont get over 100 mile till 5 th race of 6. anyone the same? johns are you in lanarkshire a lot of members have for got that it is racing pigeons as they think that it is better to have a lot of rubbish left at the end of the season so they have to pick them out there selfs to put in the bin
Beanz Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 new transport company this year we will have 1 race from Portland which is just over 200 miles.

ALF Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 just a post wondering how far each members longest young bird race is each year? my federations is 148 miles which is Ripon. This is on the back of two 60 miles, two 76 miles and one about roughly 110 miles. THE THING IS JOHN A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO DO GO TO THE LANARKSHIRE RACE PROGRAMME AGM ARE NOT INTERESTED IN THE YOUNG BIRD NATIONAL THATS WHY THE LONGEST RACE IS USUALLY 150 -160 MLS BECAUSE THE MAJORITY AT THE MEETING VOTED FOR IT
Roland Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 Was in Canada where 400 miles back to back are flown each year, and the birds fly them both, afte 300 - 350 milers. Jacksons Yearlings did the 1000 miles and I have flown and timed in well 460 miles with the y/b's. Yes too many molly cuddle... they breed 100 + to lose most and are worried to go abve 160 - 200 in case they lose some.... Mind Boggles.
JohnS Posted February 2, 2007 Author Report Posted February 2, 2007 re alf, i agree thats what people vote for and thats if thats what they want they should get it. the distance of 150 miles would just about be suffcient b4 jumping to 250 mls IF there was a good run of decent races at 60,75,100,120,150,150 but as we have it it is 60,60,75,75,110 then 150. its the 4 races under 100 miles that tells us nothing about our pigeons and creates many false dawns. thats why so often we have bad later races in young birds as all are lost at once on a day they have to work.
REDCHEQHEN Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 Shortest 55 miles, longest 240 miles but I am one of the shorter fliers in the NEHU
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 around here the shortes race is 100 miles for me and im the closest, (the people in my club are distence fanatics) :-/
pigeonscout Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 Distance also depends on climate and weather young birds in the UK could be faced with 40 mph head winds, fog and rain.
Roland Posted February 2, 2007 Report Posted February 2, 2007 Distance also depends on climate and weather young birds in the UK could be faced with 40 mph head winds, fog and rain. likewise nigh and every where else.
