Wiley Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 No but I don't mind as I was quite open about it, We lost most of our birds to salmonella last year, we had the birds post mortemed by DEFRA and as we have a small holding with other livestock including chickens so we had to get the all clear from DEFRA before we could eat or sell eggs, which we now have. We also stay on the edge of the country so eradicating all the things that carry disease would be impossible Our salmonella was brought in by a pigeon I bought from a guy, it was a carrier who showed no signs of any ailment. He has since lost all his stock because he did not want to involve DEFRA Ailments are present in all creatures and when you vaccinate you put in parts of the ailment so they can build up antibodies. The ailment comes to the fore for a number of reasons. New strains...so quarantine, Stress, don't over vacinate. We now have regular checks and glad to say we have the all clear We always quarantine new birds, we have never lost a bird again we send a live bird and samples of droppings to DEFRA Your always taking a chance when using any poison because if the the vermin pick it up on their feet they can spread it about, therefore a chance other creatures picking it up. Electronic repellents are great if you have a power source. Traps are good only if you can check them regular Thanks for your concern but we now have good healthy birds, sadly we had to learn the hard way sorry dovescot didnt know of your past experience, my question before was posted towards rick, but glad your going about things with the right procedures
Guest Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 Well turned out to be kissadeath for me, saying fings were sorted; > Beginning of week discovered maize under drinker stand which is blocked-off to birds; hadn't noticed it before and thought maybe there from last year, but awfy fresh looking; cleaned it away, a few grains back again next day which I thought I'd missed, cleaned again - this morning, back again, all maize, all with heart nibbled out. Can't see any tracks anywhere in the deep litter, or in the dust on overhead rafters, so baffled??? I've also two ultrasonic deterrants. What's gone wrong??? Deaf mouse??? Put one of those 'run' traps under hope it does trick.
pigeondan Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 You'll never beat me I was around long before man and breed faster than than you can catch me
Wiley Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 i remember about 4 yrs ago going to a loft they guy would only clean out his loft once every two years his deep litter was well high, he had rats in his lofts nesting in the deep litter, you wouldnt have known they was there untill they came out! They guy was still winning but wouldnt want my loft to be rat infested like his was
Guest Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 sorry dovescot didnt know of your past experience, my question before was posted towards rick, but glad your going about things with the right procedures Yes thought you were 'speaking' to Rick as couldn't recall a post from DoveScot. Think that is one of the benefits of using 'quote' button, helps others know exactly whose post you are picking up on.

chickadee Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 Have you tried using a small piece of chocolate on the trap? A bit of mars bar, choc bikky, etc.....this usually works! Yes mice love chocolate or anything sweet.
barlbylofts Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 the mice normaly take food back to the nest for the young.so normaly they all die in the nest.but you do find one or two laying around never had any probs with the birds getting piosend.
frank-123 Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 i dont like touching mice so i bought this trap all you do bit of choclate inside mice go get it and are killed with 240v up there jacksy it also works with batteries if you dont have electric in your loft there is a cheaper version on there website think it does the same job as for the noise repellent they dont work i have had two in my house and the mice still pay a vist ;Donly once though ;D since i bought my zapper http://www.martleyelectronics.co.uk/rat_mouse_traps.htm#zapper
Roland Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 Yep use a=mars Bar in my Traps, set them regularly, weks nothing, then one or two ... as wnetr draws in always get a few. Or one can dip a mars bar, or peanut butty sarnie in Anti Freeze, and slide it up a 2" pipe, when nowt can get in etc. but mice... they love it to death.
Roland Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 Mind it's good that you have mice, because that means they are no rats... you usually have one or the other, but very sldom if ever both, and then not for long, as rats soon clean them up like.
