timbarra Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 it has probably been taken in during the harvest of the corn, i have seen these things around my garden mate so dont panic, usually totally green but has changed colour to try and blend in with the colour of your grain, to avoid predators. it probably has not invested your grain at all, if you find no more it has been harvested in during the crop being cut. do you buy from a farm or do you use commercial mixes, my guess is its local farm mixture you use, its nothing just chuck it into the garden and get back to normal. spence

pigeonpete Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 thought you may find this interesting dunc, they are fairly common round cheshire, and they change colour with the seasons http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/forums/insects/17519-green-shield-bugs.html
Guest Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 I've seen this beetle many's a time in my garden , and its big brother which is bigger and has antlers and is maybe a soldier of the species I think. Also just and ordinary garden beetle I think, tho haven't a scoobie on name or species.. tho harvest or stag beetle ring a bell??? Don't know why coloured beetles have been put up cos this ones black, as in DoveScot's original pic. Easy to knock someone posting info as a cut & paste from the internet, especially when you don't appear to be able to find it yourself - trick is know what you are looking for in the first place , as can be seen from the 'attempts' on the thread up till now.
thunderboult Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 hi bruno got the book in front of me now and it's def. a hawthorn sheid bug .the trick is i know what i'm looking for
Guest Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Thunderboult, I thought it was a black beetle we were looking at in DoveScot's original pic? Is it actually the green coloured bug in Bonzo's post 19 ? If it is, then I've never seen anything like it. How does that get into a bag of feeding? Also wrong shape for the black beetle I was thinking of , mines was a fiesty thing called a devils coach horse, thought the things on its head were antlers, they are bleeding jaws! Head is also wrong shape for a weevil, which , might have been a good bet as it was found in a bag of feeding.
thunderboult Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 the picture in my book is like dovescot picture there is a bit of green on it ,bonzo's may b a diff variety ,it say's in the book that it's a common british bug . i fancy it must have fallen in as he opened the bag , i see quite a lot of these around the garden they also fly , maybe worth traing a few lol
Fair Play Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Are you going to ring it just in case it gets lost - Stag Beetles are all but extinct

REDCHEQHEN Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I found a strange bug in the house - and found it on the internet - e-mailed the bloke from the site - and he was very informative - the bug in my house was native to Australia - a lily beetle - it was about an inch long - and bright orange with stripes (I think) and about 12,000 miles from home (I was worried in case it was something that might munch through my furniture :B )
