Hi,

If you had a hen that you had been getting ready for the longest race of the season. You planned to send her on her first baby of the year and her cock got lost but she kept sitting. Would you let her hatch out or keep her on eggs?

I'm wondering if she hatches she may have to much stress put on her. What's your opinion?

Thank you.

IF IT WAS MY HEN THE COCK WOULD HAVE BEEN STOPPED RACING AS SOON AS I HAD PICKED HER OUT FOR 1 OF THE LONGER RACES ;)

If she as performed well before on very small youngsters just let her hatch one of the eggs, depends on how old the youngster is when you send her,the older the youngster the more it will take out of her feeding it on her own.

It was actually lost of the loft! I had planned on sending the pair, but that's life eh.

IF YOU CAN KID THE HEN ON UNTIL SHE GOES TO THE RACE THEN YOU MIGHT BE LUCKY BUT IF NOT KEEP HER TILL NEXT YEAR MATE ;) ;)

If they hatch, send her with confidence. But make sure they are there on her arrival. Where's the race from, Niort?

When her mate went missing (Tuesday) i put her on pot egg's. She was due to hatch tomorrow.

We have decided to give her a chuck tomorrow night and come home to a youngster that hatched tonight.

The race is from Tarbes 750m +/-, she is three years of age and unfortunately due to the restrictions imposed on us she has not had chance to race from 500 miles as a two year old which we would of preferred. So the question maybe in vain as to send them that far it is hard/foolish to be too confident.

As it stands at the mo she is my second choice of four.

Thank you for your input Alf, pigeon man and Vic i respect your opinions and replies gratefully.

she wont sit on the eggs too long , so whenever she was starting to loose interest , id put a big 5 day old yb under it [if she hasnt soft food id keep swapping the young bird for a fresh one i,e put the yb back with the original pair , then give it the other one , this should make the hen keen , but off course it has to be fit and ready for the race,,,,good luck

Sorry Ribble, I didn't realise the distance involved. I thought you were talking of a 500 mile race, but 750 mile!!!!!!!!!! I would not even try to give advice from this ditance.  Play it the way you see it yourself, but whatever you decide, the very best of luck. Sincerely, Vic.

The hen who lost her mate, the one i wanted peoples opinions on.

She was third to the loft, clocked just after tea (found in loft) Saturday.

Four birds were entered.

So sorry Ribble , I heard Brezzy had a stormer, but was so tied up with my own meagre attempt from 500 miles, didn't even check the NFC hotline. Your performance can only be described as incred/RIBBLE! you must think you are dreaming SURELY?  Brilliant flying by any standards.
