im secretary of my club and last few months has me questioning my position.

i feel that the job is a thankless one and members dont realise the work involved for pitence.

ive been sec now for about 4-5yrs and always getting the entire vote for another year.

ive had a very long think about the job and ive come to the conclusionat the end of the year they can shove it.

this year after 2 attemps of applying for funding ..awards...on my own secured funding for the club and yet to date i have not had one member say any word ..such as thankyou/good on u/welldone...or anything...not that i wanted one, but it would have been nice to hear someone say it.

ive done a lot behind the scenes and secured twice new premises for our club.

i do the run about for the club and always the 1st at the club or 2nd..and one of the last to leave.

if ur a sec do u put up with nonsence like this?

its the same old story in many clubs the willing horse gets all the work. sadly most members dont give a toss and dont care who does the work as long as its not them

Exactly the same Strapper,  been sec since moving here but as with you have had enough and this is my last season at it!

To many members who just want to take take take including a member who has just applied at this time of the year incase we get grant for ETS as is he doesn't join now he might have to buy his own!

I'm not a Club Secretary but over the years have held similar positions and know exactly what you mean. I bet though that these peole who have been silent are the first to make themselves heard when they want something or things don't go their way!

It's like the old saying about not appreciating something until it's gone!

Hope all goes well whatever decision you make.

as always its the usual members who do all the work while some just take the pizz by making excuses.

In one word "no" ;D

Personaly I find that it only takes the actions of one or two ungrateful members to wipe out all the good actions of the rest of the club.

Even with all the hassle still have great satisfaction doin the job though ;)

Human nature dictates that people want to get away with doing as little as possible.  I have been secretary and convoyer, and can testify that pigeon fanciers are the worse.  If you want my view, the only way to combat the idle members is to set up a rota of duties, so that everyone does their fair share, and only agree to be secretary on that basis.

I was sec for 2 years in 2005 and 2006.. They do take you for granted,, the oldman is now the sec and I help him do the results everyweek.. I think you have to be very thick skinned .. I applied and got a grant for the club with little thanks..

the secs job is the hardest in any club,, the sec runs the club,,

goodluck

Sure, I know the feeling, had my resignation written out more than once this year! I took the job on and didnae even have birds at the time! ;D Too many ungrateful members cause the majority of problems, but I think that's just the way life is these days.  :-/

I 've been a Secretary for several years now and you can end up being the mainstay around which the Club revolves.   Most fanciers will always help out but the number who will commit themselves to a duty are harder to find.

I have found the best way to combat this is to delegate responsibility.  I have become the General Secretary and Treasurer and my job is the background administration , subs, rings, distances and loading the computer programme making sure that everything is in place for Racing to take place.  Every year before I take this job I make sure that there is a basket comittee and clock committee with I/C  in place to do the weekly racing duties, we also have a Race Secretary who collects the birdage and compiles and posts the Fed result.

Due to work commitments I am normally one of the last to arrive on marking nights and everything is running smoothly, likewise strike off, I usually get there when most of the clocks have been printed off and I normally do the result.

I have shown other members how to use the programme in my abscence (holidays) and the result has been calculated OK.

They can do it if they have to.

I successfully applied for a grant for the Club for ETS which has given me a lot of extra work primarily, mainly ring registration with 25 competing members, but now the members have overcome their initial 'fear' of the system I am getting offers of assistance to do the ring registration next season.

If you still wish to be the Secretary, put a few ground rules down, delegate jobs and stop being a 'one man band'. That's no good to you or the Club. If no-one wants to assist then leave the lazy b*******s to their own devices.

Like I said ,Strapper,  delegate.  Many hands make light work,  as long as everything is in place most fanciers will assist.

If they want to race pigeons then they must realise that Secretaries are not slaves.

The most important job is the adminstration, once that is done any fancier should be capable of marking the birds and helping with the clocks on a weekly basis and taking on a bit of responsibility (a nasty word)

I am lucky with the members in my Club, they are capable of basketting, marking, checking and compiling a result in my abscence. Which is how it should be, in their interests as well as mine.

I was secretary for many years, and presented the race sheet on a Saturday night, in a 40 member club for years on end, using some of the most basic methods one could imagine. Before the days of computers, I would work out the velocities by long division, then type the result onto an inky duplicating skin, and reel them off individually, on what we called a duplicating machine. Dont remind me! lol. Always remember that unsuccsessful members will always show their ugly heads, if you are also a winning secretary to boot. Sad but true. I must start a thread on "All our Yesterdays" in the near future. lol. Cheers, Vic.

i wish you would it would make interesting reading

Well can only speak as I find. In the Northampton South Rd club Trevor is thought the world o and the members do let him know, do help and discuss anything. He is a pigeon man through and through.

In the Corby Club, Bob is certainly one of us, and has the 100% the backing and good will of the club, as many times it has been shown... and often is voted the Club man of the year... would take a great effort for anyone to get that from him any season. In the Desborough Club, Nigel is new, but offered and given help in any way possible. Now, as for club members and their quirky, selfish little ways, many are a few ounces short of the pound granted.

Indeed I have only know one Secretary that was disliked... very much so, and was an arrogrant, big headed plonker...  The fancy as as whole disliked him, and he left the area, is back this way again apparently and one or two speak and visit him... but still to hear a genuine good word about the creep.

Must have met 20 odd secs, only two are-soes

So I would say that it is well worth it, and worthwhile. Further i believe that they are a special, fancy foremost at heart genuine people.

I will never forget the words of Bob Moffatt,  When I was doing well, both ways. "Don't let the *expletive removed* get you down, Vic".  Bob, by the way was the best ever secretary of the the Amal in my opinion, and deserved to be at the helm  of the RPRA for  his  knowledge of the game in general.

It depends on why someone took on the sec's job in the first place, some take it on for ego and the fuzzy warm feeling of importance that comes with the role, some take it on because they have a passion for the sport, some take it on for other reasons buts its usually the first two that count.  'Thanks' is like the word 'sorry', for some reason its not in many people's vocabulary.  My view, good luck and well done on the work you've already done, you may give up the post but don't give up the sport.   ;)
