I think Mark mean's that some people race their old birds on the dark Jimmy ;)

are you meaning racing the old birds on the darkness system??  i cant see any benefit from that mark   :-/  i think its the 21st dec  is the shortest day , so after that a tiny bit lighter each night[a min or so] , but not noticable untill the end of jan or therabouts , so i cant see any benefit from that  :)

think it would be better in the nationals if they flew,,,in,, the dark ;D,,,nevermind on the dark ;D,, mind you theres been time, ins ,,,in the dark ,, i remember timing in at 4 20 am ,,with the race opening at 4 30 ;D  remember newcombe timing in at 11 50 ,,,and the bird arriving then , he reckoned it followed the street lights ,, just goes to show  :)

Hi Jimmy,

Interesting reading as this is my first season breeding / racing.

I have been advised to pair up around xmas time.

It is my intention to take just 1 round from the birds, this hopefully giving me 16ybs and have been offered ybs from local lads, plus my space is not to great.

if I have my calculations right I should have weaned ybs around mid feb time, will these have to be darkened down (darkness) or can I keep them natural?

yes these ybs would still have to be darkened down untill the longest day  :) to have a full body moult and retain their flights :)

ahh get you now ;D  thought you meant darkening natural birds ,,now ;D

yes i have raced w hood cocks on semi- light [whilst racing], during their resting period from 7 am [ after theve been out an hour]  untill 5pm , then i hour  excercise ] back in to semi dark, they seem to rest far better , then fly a lot better when out for excercise   [keeps an edge on them :)]

Thanks Jimmy.

I really struggle with this term 'darkness'

I thought that by pairing end of Dec, birds would be 6months old ish around end of June, and would have the moult finished, also thought  I'd be able to take my birds out training etc from early April onwards making use of the lighter evenings after work..

I dont really want to go through a darkness procedure with them.

If I dont darken them down what will the result be come racing time, birds missing loads of feathers??

If I didnt pair until say end of Feb, would the ybs still need darkness, and would they be competitive come the yb races?
