sapper756 Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 With Blackpool just around the corner, was wondering what are forum members views/experiences of attending auctions? I have heard that not all auctions are as fair as they make out, by this I mean that some have people in the crowd, who,s role it is, is to hype up the prices of birds by bidding with no intention of buying. I am not for one minute saying that all auctions adopt this unfair approach. I myself have had some decent birds for a decent price at auctions, but have also been curious of others who constantly bid, but never end up going home with a bird. Friend or Foe? :-/ What do you think folks?
b.massey Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 Yeah I think there will be some auctions that do have the hype them up mentality. But the bottom line should be that if you put a value on the pigeon you should stick to the value you've gave yourself and not pay over the odds. A lot of people think...mmm I'll go to £100, then bidding starts and they get out bid at the 100 mark they think oh only another tenner then the next thing they're winning bidder at £150. If i value a bird in my mind I dont go over the mark I value.
Guest KING BILLY Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 your spot on same dealers every year making big bucks wonder how maney pigeons bought and bread of ever make the grade and how maney pigeons are sold
OLDYELLOW Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 you only pay over the odds at auctions better buying straight from the nest for half the price , but as in anything a bird is only worth what you are willing to pay if you go to mr x and hes selling ybs for £150 each and mr y for £50 both with similar results then the man will sell 3 times aas much as mr x its a buyers market you either 1 accept the price 2 hagle or 3 go elsewhere
kirky Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 I avoid auctions just dont trust them, far better to see a price on the pen, I have seen all the anticks that go on in past years, with so called commision bids. and was told what to watch for by an auctioner.
gangster Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 by law you have the right 2 view the commission list and contact details of the bidders 2 verify there real...
sapper756 Posted January 14, 2009 Author Report Posted January 14, 2009 I would like to add, that I will be attending Raymond Molvelds auction, I have met Raymond on 2 occasions and bought birds from him, and both times, he gave me very good advice, and what I believe to have been fair prices. So I have no hesitation in going to his auction at Blackpool.
just ask me Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 there are some good birds at autions no doubt what i have seen before s when a certain man is bidding a local competitor to him will bid more than him so he cant get the bird then walk out the door with out paying just so he cant get the bird

I once tried gangster and was told i was not allowed to view the commision bidders highest bid as he might get it at a lower price. the r.pr.a has a rule book for auctions i might just send for one, as the standard rules cover very little.
sapper756 Posted January 14, 2009 Author Report Posted January 14, 2009 20% DISCOUNT FOR SAPPER... ;D ;D ;D aye at least ;D ;D ;D
gangster Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 IKNOW AS I WAS HOLDING THE COMMISSION BIDS A FEW YEARS AGO FOR ASALE OF GERARD/WASHINTON IT WAS AVAILABLE 2 SEE....
sapper756 Posted January 14, 2009 Author Report Posted January 14, 2009 The thing I don,t like about putting on a commission bid is, if some of these less honest auctions inform their stoogies out in the crowd of the highest commission bid, then they bid for them right upto the bid before that of the commission bid, then it goes to the commission bid for there maximum offer :-/ does this make sense????? :-/
kirky Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 IKNOW AS I WAS HOLDING THE COMMISSION BIDS A FEW YEARS AGO FOR ASALE OF GERARD/WASHINTON IT WAS AVAILABLE 2 SEE.... that is how it should be but it is not always the case thats why louella wont buy at auctions anymore.
Novice Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 I don't think the commission bids are the real threat. It's the plants in the audience falsley bidding. I know this happens at Blackpool. What really surprises me is that sprinters are often much more expensive than genuine 500 mile pigeons. I struggle with that one.

Your defo right about the false bids in the audience not at all auctions but have seen it myself and been asked to do it myself (politely declined) so it does happen.
Guest Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 I believe that some but not all auctions have so called ghost bidders a friend of mine was bidding at an auction for a particular bird he didnt go alone as he said he took a watcher after a few bids coming from the back of room outbidding my friend the watcher said there is no way anybody else was bidding once it reached £200 yet my friends last bid was £280 needles to say he let the bidder at the back have it for £300,In 04 there was an auction at Blackpool for Bob McDonald i put comission bid of £200 for 1 i was told after i was no where near ave was £250 yet last year i bought 2 direct from Bob £90 and 3 arrived beats paying £750 which is what the auction value was now for a good auction story in 04 i put a com bid for a jan arden in Louellas allfair auction in Ireland of £250 i was contacted on the mon following the auction and told my com bid was successful and that i had got it for £70 this hen is still out on loan and has bred yb to score at club and fed
