sapper756 Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 According to the latest forecasts, we are more than likely to get snow on the East coast on Sunday evening into Monday morning. So make sure we are prepared for this. ie, frozen drinkers, chilled eggs etc. What precautions do PB members take for such conditions? I,ll make sure my drinkers are emptied, prior to locking up the lofts on Sunday night, thus preventing them from freeeeeezing :-/ Don,t have to worry about chilled eggs as I have none yet

pigeonscout Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 bit of salt in drinker if freezing for birds and if its cold we at our house all sit around a candle and when its realy cold we light it Bit like our house then ;D ;D ;D
pigeonscout Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 Took this from another site. If you can get the water under cover and off the ground it may help, tennis balls and apples don't work. If it's a small amount of water then dropping one or two glass irn bru bottles filled with boiling water in can act as a hot water bottle staving off the water freezing..if its a plastic drinker on the side of a cage, wrap a sock over it and try tucking a rechargable gel hand warmer inside the sock next to the bottle (or under the bowl) They are cheap to buy...about £5 for two... and they heat for about eight hours, once chilled simply boil in a saucepan for ten minutes to use them again...they work for years!!
OLDYELLOW Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 Salt? How much and is it OK if they are feeding young? I'm worried that the water will freeze and they won't be able to feed the babies. i put 1/2 a level teaspoon in a 9 pint drinker never done mine any harm
Guest IB Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 Unusual [as in not expected] experience with one of my drinkers, which is an inch [if that] off the concrete floor. Sits on one of those nest box grills. It's the most used, cleanest after-use and always ice-free. The others have been 6 inches and 4 feet respectively off the ground, still dirtier after-use and iced-over.

Doctors use to give this to new born babies in their bottle if they had vomiting and diarrhea to stop them dehydrating
