Guest G.Drysdale + son Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 After a race and rest what's the ideal distance for training & how many days prior to the next race? I had a training toss this evening & plan for 1 on Wednesday & 1 on Thursday about 15-20 miles each toss.
Novice Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Probably depends on the severity of the race and when you want the birds to peak but what you propose seems good to me. But don't take chances training in high winds. Rather leave them at home than risk hitting wires.
sapper756 Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Once racing is underway, I do not train my widowhood cocks anymore, just around the loft, as for my naturals, I do try and get at least one toss, usually a Tuesday, if not, then Wednesday. I do not like training any later in the week.
BANDIT Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 after a race i give my birds a training toss on the monday, if it was a tough race then one day later on tuesday, allways rember they got a long training toss on the saturday ie the race, i train them from 9 miles once they have started to race, BANDIT
Guest numpty01 Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 daily at 20miles keep um fit and keen rest only after race day
Roland Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 daily at 20miles keep um fit and keen rest only after race day Spot on.
Guest Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 If your birds are any good they won't really need training as they'll cover 20 miles while flying out of the loft and once raced they know what to do. If you have the resources and time though sending them 20 miles is good sound advice.
john nico Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 my birds are fit but i will always train them just so they keep it in there head for when they get out ov that basket its home they will fly
weecunny Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 daily at 20miles keep um fit and keen rest only after race day spot on wind mist it no matter if they fit they come hame

DAVIDL Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 agree with sapper756, once racing has started dont train widowhood cocks unless you think they might need the odd training toss.....

I had a training toss this evening & plan for 1 on Wednesday & 1 on Thursday about 15-20 miles each toss. if this is w,hood cocks would go along with sapper, and would maybe add , if cocks are not trained , they will fly this distance around the loft , and would enjoy doing it, without the stress of travelling, basketing etc,, they can be tossed when needed , if needed if natural maybe
