Well as many may recall, I've had a right shower of bad luck and what not over the last three / four seasons or so. Started with introducing new stock. That’s when CR$P came down the shoot big time. So what with one thing or another I struggled to stay interested, focused, and replaced all my old family. A new learning curve re – learnt was  / is painful remembering much that later we take for granted, like you have to know your birds to take any liberties. Like no 35 miles first chuck perhaps.

Any way I bred 40 youngsters. Lost many off the top.

Started to train, real slow. Soon down to 16 youngsters. Then two chucks where the youngster hit torrential rain big time from 25 miles. But they came through it well as one.

Picking days I progressed. Till I got 2 x 50-mile tosses this past week and they were coming a treat, 16 banging home as one. Indeed I told Joyce these were as good a batch as I've ever possibly had. Certainly in numbers as to the odd few we build upon.

First time in 4 years I’ve been interested in pigeons and first week where I haven't wanted to pack up each day. I’d left the ET in box till this week never even bothered to open it … Mind wouldn’t have used it till all club members were using it as I won’t  / don’t want unfair advantages. Yes that is how I have felt every day. Not getting any buzz or interest, feeling it was a waste of time and not even wanting to race. Only the thought that I'd know down the line I'd want them again stopped me getting shot of them all.

Still they rested and lazed around Friday. So was happy going to the club, but said nothing of course but was actually looking forward to timing in and using the ET timer I had had set up in the week.

It was just a 96 miler, a decent start and wing opener.

Up at 6 50 and I force my self out of bed and set up the ET in the loft ready. Wasn’t really worried for a change later about going toilet or making a cuppa lol

9 0 ' Clock came and nary a sausage. 12 :30 same, not a feather. 3 : 30 nothing and I was off to London to do a fund – raiser. Got home early hours and checked me loft…. Nothing!

Now here we next day, nary a feather, and I am well and truly peeved of in the highest degree … sorry not just disappointed but really deflated. Grumpy with Joyce and shouldn’t be, grand kids seem to be coming out of the woodwork, Missed all the World athletics so far and like a bear with a sore head.

     I know that’s pigeons!

Mind to get shot and fill the lofts up with coal and wood for the winter.

There! Now do I feel any better getting that of my chest?   No!

I don't really know what to say Roland because I haven't started to race mine yet, but I have had pigeons for about 15 years and things like this happen. We couldn't give them up if we wanted to mate, you know that, no matter how dissappointed you feel right now. It's fellas like you with your experience that keep new lads like me interested and help us along, so don't go quitting yet because I get the feeling I'm gonna need you next season!  ;)

Things can only get better...

Pontefract.

Yep I'm gutted too.

Thought 'At last I'll have a few tested yearlings - lightly raced - for next year and 10 two / three year olds'.

Sunny days Yearling and Cocks birds for Middle hardish races and some hens for the real races. Distance or hard.

Sorry to hear your pain Roland, I live in Barnsley South Yorkshire I would say its about 15 mile from Pontefract Race Course, I presume thats were your birds were liberated, how many did you send and what was the other retirns like in your club/fed. If you have any reported down this end, give us a nudge and I will sort them out for you.

It might be a Yorkshire thing but thats what I meant. I'll sort them out meaning I'll collect and get them back to Roland. :-/

k,,i no wht you mean now ;) ;)

You can't just leave it like that Roland

does your club mix the youngsters up - or were they all in one basket?

What were the returns like in your club?

I believe Peterborough Fed had a terrible race from Aycliffe on Saturday - most of the birds headed North instead of South - the strong South West winds here (Redcar) were well over 25mph on Saturday

Well being honest it kinda tells you something about the birds or the fancier or even both. Dont really know you or your birds, so i cant say what it is, theres possibly only one person that knows that. It took me nearly 20 years to judge myself truthfully, the birds were'nt good enough, neither was the fancier!

But thats the one thing i like about this sport is the challenge. When you've had a bad race, do you give up and say *expletive removed* it, or do you sit down and wonder where it went wrong, make a plan and go for it! We are only talking pigeons after all, just a hobby for most, nothing too serious, and if it gets serious then it is time to get out.

sorry to hear of your loss roland, i have seen this happen b4 , to many top fanciers,, there could , and obviously would be many reasons for this happening,, as with pigeons lol,, its allways" back to the drawing board"  good luck in some returns and in finding out ,,why

Sent 16... all I had... lost 16.

Yes Mick Bowler your probably right. After 50 odd years around pigeons I know you never stop learning - must have had too much luck in past, instead of knowledge and the Good Lady is taking some back.

The stock I bought in from very good national winners, and good fanciers that have let me have some do well with them. So I thing your rightas there is still none home. The £20 of rings on the legs are not important. They are winged stamped.

Would take and Axe and Saw and fell, cut up some wood and fill the loft up. By in summer rate coal and store it .... but am feel if i do, I might want to start again next season or so etc.

ET clock stil not used lol.

Roland stick hang in there - Dust yourself down and start again - Maybe even take a round of latebreds from the stock and start rebuilding sooner rather than later - Before you dwell on things for too long and really start imaging that loft as a wood store!

Roland not even going to comment on how you must be feeling. :o But i will have 2 hatching out off my only good cock. and his hen was bought for stock, had 3 channel wins. the cock, has won 4 times for me topped fed twice, and finished 7th and 11th combine out of 5000 and 7000 ish birds and Got me 3rd cheshire 2 bird messac. And he is only a 2007 bird. and i honestly believe if he was in the hand of a good fancier, he would have doubled those wins. You can have them with pleasure mate. Just let me know, I not they can be auctioned off for 1 of the good causes on here. :-) i have 2 in race team and 3 latebreds off them.

Know exactly how you feel, birds all raced 62 miles sent them 82miles lost 13 sent 5 to 107 miles lost 4/5 sent again to 107 miles lost 3/5 the season is over still have some left but not trained but will be pushed hard over the comming weeks a lot of good birds have been lost one member had 5/27 two reported one in Ayrshire the other in Exeter From Otterburn  :-/

It's the sign of the times mate I am afraid. Too many loses. How did the other members get on. If they had them in then your birds where not up to it, If not then it's the sign of pigeon racing. Things have changed over the years.

Not been the kindest of weather for birds to work home in. Hope they come through OK for you.
