Guest SPORTKA Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 As I have to work full time I have limited time in the loft, I normally spend 1/2 hr first thing (6.30 am) doing drinkers then about an hour scraping floors of a night, (7.00pm- 8pm) this means that on my day off and Sunday it takes all day to give the loft a good thorough clean, for example today its took me about 7 hrs in there with doing all boxes and cleaning and dressing the floors , loft is 24ft x 8 im NOT complaining by the way, but wondering if im been too fussy keeping it clean, any time saving tips appreciated. How long do you guys and girls spend cleaning ?

chris h Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 i have a 24 x 6, 3 section loft and it takes me about two hours to do it that includes drinkers scraping out perches and nest boxs an scraping floors and putting the litter through the riddle.and then i feed them. if i spent all day sunday with the doo's my mrs would doo her nut ;D
Guest joshdonlan Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 long handle scraper is a must
chickadee Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 I spend a good couple of hours maybe longer scraping and cleaning out the two lofts on a mon, wed, and friday every week I just feed and water them every weekend so that I can go places if I want to. ;D
blackdog Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 i have mine on a deep litter of natural floor granuals, best thing i have ever done, all nestboxes and y/bird pipo boxes have grills so takes about 10 mins a day, i used to clean out 3 times a day a few years a go but that had to change when i got the dreaded pfl, but eh, it means more time watching the birds rather than being a slave to them

David048 Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 twice a day mainly scraping the boxes - takes about 15 minutes. floor takes about 10 minutes again, twice a day. I think the main thing is to make sure the loft is dry. I use bleach once every 2 weeks during spring and summer when it can dry out quickly.

Taylorsloft Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 two long i wont be keeping 70 pigeons this winter
Guest Jargre- Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 let them live in a bit of natural, keeping the places too clean isn't giving them any chance to build up thier immune systems to counter crap they will come across over the years, once every other day is good enough, or as one fella said above, once a year won't hurt them, not my cup of tea that mind, I don't like the squishy feeling walking knee deep in sh-ite ;D ;D ;D
marmite Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 i clean out once every 2 days if work permits otherwise its done once on a sat loft 60ft x 8ft go through the lot in hr and half if i get a wriggle on but gonna put them on deep litter next pay day i h8 scrapein out
Guest SPORTKA Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 4 Sections with 16 birds in each section, I have put my young birds on easibed today, so hope this will cut workload a bit, as I plan on changing it every two weeks.
Guest joshdonlan Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 leave the easibe down 4 months just keep adding to it

How long do you guys and girls spend cleaning ? I always had a flat timber floor cleaning a loft 24x8 3 sections took me about a half hour, during the breeding season about an hour because of the boxes. during the racing season 20 minutes would do the whole lot, big scraper done twice a day. I could spend 7 hours in the loft but not cleaning out, if it was done every day you are never stuck with a big clean. I never belived in dressing the floor if it can be cleaned every day, think its only if you cant get out to the loft every day, try the dry floor its spotless and very little dust for you and the birds.
ALF Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 where you the judge alf?? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D NAW :P 3 different judges :P :P ;D ;D ;D ;D
Guest Owen Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 I clean the cocks out every day, twice, while they are out flying. The hens are on wire. The youngsters are on deep litter based on a mixture of wood chips and granuals. The cocks take a couple of minutes and the youngsters take a couple of minutes to rake through the deep litter to keep it fresh and dry. The hens take no time. I give the place a good clean on the weekend. I have friends who spend hours on the cleaning. It does not always lead to them being better flyers. A lot of the time they are upsetting and worrying the birds instead of respecting their home. How can the birds feel relaxed and happy if there is a great big human invading their space and upsetting things.

Guest IB Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 I'm still on winter regime so Mon - Fri 20 mins covers quick clean, water changed and fed, 40 birds, 6 sections. Dusted boxes and perches with stalosan so droppings don't stick, basically roll them into tray, bag and bin them. Sat and Sun once a month spend maybe 1 hour tops each day on cleaning, and turning over deep litter, cocks one day, hens the next.
ohiogsp Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 Deep litter havent cleaned my yb loft in 2 years. Perches are 2x4 rails and they poop off the front or back and it hits the floor. Haven't scaped in about a year. I just turn the floor over once and a while (months between doing that). Last year was my best year for ybs yet.
