Guest cosmic dave Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 As you all know (through my many posts) I have been building/setting up a loft for me and my little lad, anyway we have it all up and running and had the birds out yesterday and again this morning. Because of the many cats around here I have been calling the birds in while on guard to stop the cats getting them. One bird tried to land this afternoon on the loft roof and before I had chance to get out to make sure it was OK it had gone !! I was outside within 5 or so seconds of it landing. I saw the cat with the bird in its mouth and eventually found the bird still alive, I put the bird in the loft but sadly it died I am now wondering if it is worth the upset :-/ :-/ :-/
lawrie Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 there are many cat detererants on the market, the best is water spray or hose pipe and dont be scared to spray them. i have a cat and he never goes near my birds, he got pelted with a water baloon and never gone near them again
Guest WINGS 04 Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Sorry m8 had one in the loft on Friday killed 3 birds was gutted
Guest cosmic dave Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 I have tried all sorts to discourage them I know people say an electric fence but with kids that not for me, I now have 5 terrified YBs on the house roof that must be starving but wont come in !!!
Guest Grasshopper Lofts Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 sorry to hear this mate i to am in the same position as you bloody cats, i have just ordered the big cheese cat repeller will see how this works if not its gonna have to be another dog
lawrie Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 dogs work well, deterents is something i dont believe in. it has to be a physical deterent,

chameleonjohn Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 electric fence is the answer a single wire above youre fence or on top of shed only switch on when birds are out or when kids have gone to bed it works, had loads of probs myself befor i got it.
Guest IB Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Sorry to hear of your problems. Think you may have misunderstood what an electric fence is, its only two wires, and as far as I know its no danger to humans. Electronic sensor + water jet also sounds great, folk on here use that and recommend it. Sounds daft, but a male cat of your own is also a deterrant, cats are territorial, yours would not allow others in the garden.
lawrie Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 my cat has the teretory to him self, and he owns my dog! but like i said, he wont o near my birds. he sits there when their out no problem. cat or dog is your answer. eletric fence is something im not sure about. seems a bit much for me.

Mine as I have said neds putting back up. So in the mean time A. I am resoncible B I am out there, watching, and C as such I am not bleating. If do lose one to a cat, welll :-/ le's face it, I am to blame :B :B :B One thinks - often - nohing in buying and paying throiugh the nose for a Loft, Birds and very many needless medicences and remedies. Will nip up the road twice aweek on £20' worth of petrol. Strueth :B :B If I could find a fence for between £30 -£70 I would get one I know you posted a link but all the fences on there I could see was £150 + and they was not single strand ! if I put up an obvious a fence I know my neighbours would have the council round. Maybe I should be looking at buying all the components separately ? :-/
sapper756 Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Sorry m8 had one in the loft on Friday killed 3 birds was gutted I hope it never got out the loft

Barbed wire is not legal. Cat deterants are worth a go. Electric fence is better. A dog is good too. We've all been pestered with cats. Two detterants are always better than one.
just ask me Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 i find the the cat replliers in the rp work very well
MikeMason Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 I had problems with cats. So I brought a male 5 years ago. He's not neutered so he fights and defends his territory. He’s always coming back with scars and scratches but he doesn’t touch the birds. I brought a bird up by hand when he was a kitten. I made sure he saw the bird a couple of times a day. Watching me feeding it etc. Only had 1 attack in the last 5 years since I brought him!

Roland Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 SS10E Mustang 10 1J Energiser Ref: SS10E Mustang 10 1J Energiser. The Mustang 10 is a powerful and compact 1 joule electric fencing energiser. It is an ideal unit to be used to protect your horse or pony. (Or pigeons matey) Please note. We recommend that any mains powered fence energiser is always installed indoors or in a dry environment. (this means the unit! so you can water proof it your self, or Like I have placed in the shed. But in a compartment inside the loft sealed of from the pigeons and nosey neighbours lol). BUT then it doesn;'t really matter a rat behind about the neighbours as it is perfectly legal to use ... Just tell them that they had a chance to keep their killing machine off your land, and failed miserably, so ... tough! Click here for more information on this product Price:£62.86 (Including VAT at 17.5%) Next day delivery too. There is also the one above for £50 that does exactly the same job. I'll give you the wire. Any posting - plastic etc. will do. Gosh your only need give a cat a nudge, not sending the flipping thing into orbit lol
Roland Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 picture this you dont have pigeons and you like cats, you watch someone trap a cat in a cage, put it in the car, return home sometime later without the cat. what would you think? try explaining your side of the story to the rspca. good luck! Well know what you mean, but as for the RSPCA they wouldn't even discuss it with you, let alone turn out.... Unless you said you will take the collection tin out every week - end for them free of charge :o
Guest challengerlofts Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 RSCPA should known better & make a law that cats should keep inside the house during the night. They're hunting the garden birds as well.
