Guest Greig the doo Drysdale Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 Went down to the hut the other day to find a hole in the back bottom corner or the loft so I covered it up and went back down the following day to find the same hole even bigger. went away for the weekend and got a call from my mate saying it was getting bigger so he patched it up for me. Got home went straight to the loft and found a hole in the floor now about the size of a tennis ball. Put a sheet of ply wood over it till today went back down and the hole on the floor was even bigger so now had enough went and got some antifreeze to put down with bread all round the lofts and perimitor fence hope this works. I dipped the bread in the antifreeze covered the whole slice and put it down does anyone know how fast this works and have i done it right Thanks in advance for replys Any pms will be treated with respect and discretion
OLDYELLOW Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 as soon as they start digesting it it starts but sounds like theres quite a few id get a pickstone and put some dried peas and soak them with the antifreeze and leave near entry points sprinkle some parmisan cheese on top just to give a bit of smell obviously where birds cant get at it

kirky Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 put mesh round bottom of loft to stop them getting underneath, also along back of loft as thay will always go to the back for cover, do you no anyone who has ferritts ask them for the bedding out of the cages, put this round the loft and rats will go nowhere near, you would need to replace from time to time.
Novice Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 I thin k it's best to get the appropriate poison and put it down inside the purpose built sealed containers. The council have the strongest poison if you know someone who works with them. Even if you phone the council they will tackle the problem for you. The pest control guys should be on call out. If you have a compost heap with discarded household scraps in it especially fruit this attracts them. They love fruit. One of the guys in our club works in this field so we have discussed it at ringing nights.

Roland Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 Appropiate poison is onethat is effective and works. Like oats that have been sprinkled with cement. Anti freeze in a bread and peanut butter sanries. Most - Like renta kill - crap only makes them bigger and stronger. Sister in law was asked by nieghbours to stop feeding the rats. Peplex she said she didn't. Was told that they ate the stuff on top of the barns she threww up there. But that's for the birds she says. Well the rats don't know that or care they said. So it was stopped and nephew gave the rats tibbits in pipes. No rat problem now. All people able ought to leave it out from time to time in pipes...
gooner Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 one i heard of was peanut butter with digestive bikkies mashed in then add anti freeze, you place it on a bopard and put a milk crate over it and leave it , its meant to work quite quick

Guest Greig the doo Drysdale Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 With most poisons they need about 4 good feeds and may take 7 days to die. My mate has been putting the poison down for weeks at his loft but they are still there little buggers that they are

Guest IB Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 They will charge an arm and a leg You've already paid for your Environmental Health Services through your Council tax payments. They are required by Law to respond and should deal with this to your satisfaction. The stuff they used (when I called them in for rats in my back garden years ago) is laid in the runs and designed to be carried back to the den where communal grooming ensures they are all wiped out. Give them a call, might be helpful to know where yours are coming from.
allenyeates Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 Most effective poison in rat earths(holes) is contact dust which I belive was mentioned earlier and is put down with bellows. You would need to be friendly with a pest controller to get it and avoid paying full price. We keep 8 ferrets all workers and still get rats in winter(live next to fields). I prefer fenn traps and cage traps used all winter . My usuall bait is peanut butter or bacon skin. For hard to trap rats , kipper or smoked mackerel skin is irresistable. Rat glue is also very good to have handy.
les Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 tried them mate dont work very well at our hut mate for some reasonyou have to nail them to a piece of wood so they have to eat them there ,or they take them and store them .the blue blocks im on about.

harky Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 pour old engine oil down the hole ,when they come back tonight they will get covered in it and start to lick it off ,good bye rats
