les Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 IB the problem with grey squirels in scotland has helpd the decrease of the red squirel ,as we all know ,it has been happening for over 30 years ,and it has taken untill to day for them to take proper action to start to solve the problem .that is on some thing that is not protected by a stupid law and are classed as vermin .HOW LONG DO YOU THINK IT WILL TAKE TO REALY SORT OUR PROBLEM WITH HAWKS OUT .a bloody lot longer ,i say sod them do it our way and face the concequences.
Roland Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 Was there another law regards the protection of 'Hawks / Raptures etc after the 1955 one? :-/ That was just for 2 years, and I feel it hasn't been recinded, and THAT that is the one implying their protection. If this is so.... then revert back to the common denominator, and they aren't protected!!! Now IB time for you to get looking at that side and the legalities... or lack of.
widowhooder Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 hawks 40 pound for a gun at market and shoot them
jock3 Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 what is needed is all interested party,s to pull as one to take on the rspb , better pr a new survey by a recognised body to do a count on raptors , we should have the right to protect our birds ,

The current Law is The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Applies EU-wide, covers everything, including the need for a general license e.g. just to possess The Larsen trap, and a seperate license again to use it to trap & kill raptors. As far as I know, only one 'trap & kill' license was ever issued in Scotland, a good few years ago, to extreme annoyance of RSPB, and that allowed taking cormorant that were causing havoc amongst game fish stocks in a river.

I know what you are saying, but isn't it just a bit deeper than that? Again down to human interference (1) reducing red's habitat (Caledonian forest?) (2) introducing greys from America into Britain? Plus the pox virus that greys carry and are immune to, while reds have no immunity. And Reds are Protected by Law while greys are not.

I can't find anything on DEFRA website which changes the Minister's 2008 decison that there would be no badger cull. The only 'NEWS update' I can see is a plan to vaccinate badgers against TB? http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2009/090318a.htm
