PATTY BHOY Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 just heard today from an enviorenmentle worker that a hawk will be back time and time again to the place they have found a food supply...not only this, more disturbing is they communicate with each other so this lets other hawks know where they are hunting,if they fail to return other hawks search for them and if they have been killed they will take their place... if anyone can verify this id be interested to know...

BLACK W F Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 HUNTING AREA VERY TRUE AND THEY DO SPEAK TO EACH OTHER THEY USE VODAPHONE PMSL 1 BORN EVERY MINUTE
Guest IB Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 Agree with billt. Hawks don't share food quite the opposite, they are competitive, and if another moves in on their area, they are likely to kill it. Recent research also shows that 'another hawk will move in to replace a casualty' is a myth.

Guest Owen Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 About the only bird I know that tells it's mates where there is a kill is the Raven. And they will also lead wolves to a carcass because they need the wolves to open it. Hawks would be more likely to defend their prey against intruders. That is why they screen their prey from the view of other birds. I think it is called mantling. Perhaps someone will know the correct term. The bit about hawks filling vacant territory is definatly right. Lots of prey creatures do this. That is one of the reasons why it is stupid to transfer foxes to differant areas. The resident foxes will either kill them or drive them off. But then the town do gooders would not know things like that. Would they?

Delboy Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 Davy Fleming , on this site, was doing some hawk trials for the S.H.U and he caught a sparrowhawk. He relocated it down in Ayrshire and put a tracker on it. It returned home via the Solway area, it covered maybe around 100 miles to return home. Maybe Davy could tell us the full story?

Guest Davy Fleming Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 You are exactly spot on Delboy . Hawk was tagged with a transmitter and a clip ring with a registered number on it and taken to the Ayrshire area and liberated thinking that's the last I will see of it, then it was tracked for over a week and was seen to be heading slightly south when it turned and came back to the liberation point for a few days and then returned to Armadale where it was originally caught and the bird that it had already killed was still in the trap which was reset hoping to catch something else and then got caught itself again. The guy who was dealing with this came back a second time and took it away and once again released it in same area and after a few days Doctor Lynch gave me a call to same the Hawk was back in the area but it never returned again , so there you are guys

Trapped at your loft, taken away & released but came back again (after how long?) Trapped at loft for second time, taken away & released for second time. Did it come back to Armadale a second time, but then kept clear of your loft?
