OLDYELLOW Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 I have lost ten pigeons off my loft since christmas.one was my fed topper too.can only think its b.o.p. > why let them out during winter ? i keep mine in from end of racing till i've finished breeding , seems your just a free food outlet to passing bops , at least if locked up your starving the local bops and they'll look elsewheres for food

OLDYELLOW Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 what, you get bops all year round that need feeding. yes bops are about all year round the racing season is 6 months so if locked up best part of it thats 50% less birds losted , if bops kill and are successfull they'll keep returning as long as the food source is there if locked up no food source then they'll move on

soapy Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 instead of sitting at a computer stand out in yer garden or yard , you cant give birds an open loft these days and expect not to lose birds to sparrow hawks, it aint the hawks thats to blame ,they are only doing wot they they wos made to do . i have never lost a bird to them for more than 5 yearsand my birds are out nearly every day of the year

They sit on the telegraph pole most days waiting for me!!! My loft is out in the sticks a bit.

They will attack them right in front of you aswell ,no fear . Might try a picture of you on front of loft as that seems to be the thing to scare thewm away ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Guest Owen Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 When you look at the posts on here you can see the big weakness in the Sparrow Hawk which is normally the one that takes birds near your loft. He/she does not like to give up on a kill and it is very attracted to birds in an aviary. I have an aviary for my youngsters so that they have plenty of fresh air and can bath in peace. So obviously the Sparrow Hawk becomes available for you to see what is going on. They will cling to the wire of the aviary. Goshawks are only normally a problem if your birds are near woodland. And again very easy to see and counteract. Peregrines are a whole differant ball game. I have not got the faintest idea how to deal with them. The best I have come up with so far is to stick to widowhood cocks. The cocks are usually fit enough to out fly him providing that you can get them out in the Spring to get fit. I have said all I can so there are things you can do if you sit down and workit out.
